The answer is easy, CC is bug for bug optimized for Anthropic models. They don't even test it with other models, let alone provide support for all small compatibility quirks of different provider implementations.
On the other hand, Opencode, Pi agent and other open source tool offer much better support for all models, including open source.

The problem is, they can't. If they offer smaller models for less money, it would eat up their premium offers.
The only way forward for American companies is to push for always bigger and more expensive models while using regulatory pressure and fear mongering (FUD) to discard price effective competition from China.

And yet, MiMo and DeepSeek, even MiniMax, are way cheaper and arguably better, or way better than both Sonnet and especially Haiku.
While you can argue you are ready to pay 100-1000 times the price for Fable or Opus because you need those last 1-2% of edge, there's no valid reason to keep paying the obscene amounts of money for Sonnet and Haiku when alternatives exist.

Zig is one of the worst targets for LLM generated code. It's nice that Fable has better support for Zig than Opus, but this anecdote is not representative as a general use case.

Looks like they have very effective collaboration with DeepSeek and Kimi. Those three models have been bouncing ideas and sharing R&D innovation, which made all of them improve very fast.
Based solely on quality and price, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other western models just can't compete with the new generation of Chinese open models.
