I think if you build a product that takes a lot of serious AI work to both build and run, it's going to be hard to replicate just like past "good products" were hard to replicate. It's just that the bar for what's "hard to replicate" is way higher than before.

People need to eat, sleep, be healthy, have shelter, feel loved, be in communities...

Coding has been transformed but none of those areas of our lives have been substantive transformed by AI yet. Whoever does, will create a lot of value for the world.

The swarm-based HF hack, and the observation that 40-50% of the compute at AI labs goes into training the next generation of agents, doesn't count?

We're all over here using agents to code projects that used to take weeks and feeling pretty good about it, and they're using agents to build the next generation of frontier models — an order of magnitude more complex problem...

Whenever someone finds out how to apply this level of agentic sophistication to a problem that actually matters to consumers, then you'll have that monument that everyone can see.

Most of those "trucking companies" are just self-employed truck drivers...

500k trucking companies = 1 company per 700 people in the US, which would be crazy if they were actual organizations

Is this just because LLMs can't do math directly? If so, they can certainly write scripts to do math though and those will be a lot more reliable for queries.

Berkshire Hathaway is in some sense also PE (though done by a public company that you can invest in) and Warren Buffett's culture is to find great companies run by great managers and let them cook. That long-term view is the exception and not the rule though.

It's probably related to "the optimal level of fraud in a financial system is not zero" and reducing false positives would make way harder for everyone to get loans, which is bad for both banks and consumers.

Control of the money, the software infrastructure, and social support is key to a coup. Legal correctness is very weak leverage.

Similar to a government coup where you need to control the money and the military.

Is there an analogy here to the phenomenon that senior {engineers, designers, PMs} are now able to be insanely productive with AI, but it's also very hard to train junior folks to develop the sense of judgment that senior folks have?

I've found this book to be particularly instructive in understanding how policies across the world ended up neglecting citizens and pushing them to the far right, from Trump to AfD and everything in between. It's made it clearer that these are common symptoms that arise from systemic problems, not one-off idiosyncrasies.

I strongly disagree with this on the steak part and maybe the coffee too. Many people pride themselves on buying expensive ingredients and thinking they have the best steak but it actually sucks.

To get good steak you don't need USDA Prime dry-aged steak. You just need USDA choice, picked for a bit of marbling, salted the day beforehand and dried out uncovered in the fridge, then a ripping hot heat source (grill or cast iron etc) to get a good sear on the outside (reverse or not) and a thermometer to hit medium rare on the inside.

Even a modest steak made this way tastes better than a prime steakhouse steak that was doused with salt right before cooking, where you're going to get hypertension immediately yet the meat tastes weirdly unflavorful.

To extend this analogy further, consider making BBQ brisket Texas style. Brisket is a cheap cut of tough, fatty meat. The input quality matters even less there, and it's all dependent on chef skill. Same thing with sourdough bread — 4 ingredients, all outcome depends on skill.
