That's actually pretty important, if you're an eng doing compliance work and you don't have legal counsel working side by wide with you you might be putting yourself up for legal troubles down the line. I'm glad I can always rely on legal do do their job here when doing this kind of work, I wouldn't want to do work like this just out of my ass.

Only if your job was to write code alone, which isn't what most people do. Most of my job for the past 10 years was explaining to people what had to be done, how and then verifying they did it.
Any senior/staff engineer was already doing this, if they weren't they were on the wrong job or had the wrong title.

I keep telling people that they have to design and think about it first and then go to the tool, but they keep saying “Claude can plan too” and obviously it produces some shit that requires a lot of changes while when I get it to go I can almost always one shot the stuff I want because I am actually putting in the time to give it a detailed plan of what to do.
Even just saving me the time to deal with CI is worth it.

I work with a bunch of people that just left college and we were discussing how to avoid deskilling and I said "well, you could go to local meetups". They're in NYC (I'm in Florida right now) and said there isn't much going on and I couldn't believe it. Asked some more experienced friends that have been living there for longer and they said that it all died during COVID and never came back.
I ran or helped organize meetups in multiple places, back in Brazil where I'm from, Boston and then Philadelphia. We used to joke you could have pizza and coke for dinner every night in PHL during the week for the number of meetups we had. You'd meet cool people, see people sharing their experiences, build your network and make friends all at the same time. During COVID we moved to Florida and got kids so I kinda got out of the loop with meetups, but I had no idea it was this bad.
How are these kids going to meet other practitioners, build their network and even put themselves out there by presenting?

Such an incredible write up, the piece about the importance of flying less technological planes to get a "sense" of what flying really is hits like a brick, specially in the world of LLMs producing code.
How do you get this "sense" of writing code and building systems by yourself if all you do is instruct some agent to do it? Are we all going to be like Bonin in the future where we just don't understand anything outside of the agent box?
This is both terrifying and sad.

I usually go the other way, sometimes ignoring the wall of text completely or just exiting the conversation. I find it incredibly distasteful when people do this (i also have access to all the same tools), specially because its a lazy response where they copy the conversation, paste it at the tool and just vomit the response back.
Its also usually the dickhead nobody likes that does it as well.

Lived for 5 years next to a data center in Philadelphia and it was noisy and hot almost all year long, zero benefit from living next to it other than the building being nice on the outside as it is a historical building in the city. You'd frequently see heavily armed folks there, there was no movement of people (it really felt like an abandoned building) and it brought nothing useful to the area.
401 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19108 for the address - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Commerce_Building
