Until you need to install an app through the App store. Even a free app will refuse to install without an iCloud account. Frustrating when you want something with a verified source, for me it was Wireguard, and don't want to build it locally.

I found that book to be such a slough (pun very much intended) to get through. Maybe the British humo(u)r just didn't land for me? I had the same problem with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe

Sounds like the hacker got access to call logs and tower pings, but probably didn't hack the actual phone. I'm assuming FBI-issued cell phones are pretty hard to break into, Mexican cell service providers probably less so

If you take their technical summary [1] at face value, they designed it to be limited.

Even if the hashing and matching happen on the local device, a match can only be revealed server-side. The hash database distributed to local devices will be blind hashed with a server-side secret key and the locally derived hash match will need to be decrypted with that key to be read by Apple. So theoretically if the local device doesn't upload content to iCloud, no content matching can be revealed, even if the hashing and matching has been done locally.

Of course, you also need to trust that Apple won't be uploading those locally derived hashes to iCloud without the user's permission if iCloud backups are disabled.

I built an Alexa app a few years ago for an Amazon-sponsored hackathon. Apparently it has a bit of a user base still, and for some reason Amazon sends me about $50/quarter. I don't know how the app is being monetized, it certainly wasn't something I did.

Also, because my app uses API Gateway and Lambda as a backend, Amazon gives me a $100 credit on my AWS account every month to cover the costs. My costs for the app are about $10/month, so the other $90 are used for various other activities.

Wikipedia puts their current fleet at 745 planes[1], and I'm not seeing more than 200 Southwest planes out there by my quick count. Could be close to a third of their fleet, which is still bonkers to think about.

As a user of the open source version of Fathom, I'm a little concerned by the lag in publishing this update to the community edition. I assumed development work was happening in the open on Github, but I guess that's not the case?
