For their more common meanings, like in your paragraph, as a verb you want affect, and as a noun, effect. So, when in doubt, use that as a rule of thumb.
However, both have alternative meanings as the other part of speech.
Affect as a noun means emotion or disposition, and is mostly used in psychology. Your psychologist may say you have a depressed affect.
Effect as a verb means to bring about. You might say that a successful protest effected change in society.
As a verb, in addition to “have an impact on,” affect can also mean “to pretend to have,” like “she affected an air of mystery,” although this is less common.

It’s not even just about the style. It’s a matter of respect for your readers. If you can’t be bothered to take the time to write it, why on earth should I care enough to take the time to read it?

You can also just write it.
I’d much rather read someone’s imperfect writing than the soulless regression-to-the-mean that LLMs produce. If you’re not a native speaker or don’t have confidence in your writing, I’d urge you to first ask for an edit by another human, but if that’s not an option, to be extremely firm in your LLM prompting to just have it fix issues of grammar, spelling, etc.

I did bail out because of this, despite being pretty interested in the content. I love reading, but I cannot stand LLM “writing” output, and few things are important enough for me to force myself through the misery of ingesting ChatGPT “prose.” I only made it to the second section of this one.

Thanks for sharing! I saw the 100 years exhibit in person, which was really interesting. I was especially moved by the display of and context around the Hiroshima issue. I didn’t know there was also a documentary, and I’m excited to see it

To be fair, I use “ensure” myself, but it’s just one of several quirky elements of the New Yorker’s style, along with the diaeresis on repeated vowels with different sounds (like in reëmerge or coöperate), several uncommon spellings, and unusual conjoinings like “teen-ager” and “per cent.” It’s part of the charm, I suppose

Definition 2: "to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions"
From the article:
> He sent the final memos to the other board members as disappearing messages, to insure that no one else would ever see them.
> Others were uncomfortable sharing concerns about Altman because they felt there was not a sufficient effort to insure anonymity.
> [...] to insure that the technology was deployed safely
All of these work just fine with that definition of "insure." Your comment that it's "incorrect use of English" is wrong.
The bit you quoted says there’s substantial overlap between the two. The New Yorker style is to prefer “insure” in cases where either could work.

A really aggravating thing about seeing so much AI-generated text around is that it makes me constantly second-guess my own writing. Does that sentence sound natural? Am I veering into ChatGPT territory? God forbid I use an em-dash. And how much of the perception of it "feeling" like AI text is real vs. paranoia?
It's incredibly frustrating, but maybe a silver lining is that it will help me write more authentically, I don't know.

The New Yorker prefers insure to ensure. They have a unique house style. I commented on another thread about alternative spellings like vender instead of vendor, too.

They also prefer some less common spellings. For instance, just noticed “vender” instead of “vendor” in an article this morning.

Hi Ronan, absolutely wild to see you here in the belly of the beast.
I have not read the article yet, because I get the physical magazine and look forward to reading it analog. I therefore only have an inconsequential question.
I love the New Yorker’s house style and editorial “voice,” and I have always been curious about the editing process. I enjoyed the recent exhibit at the NYPL, which had some marked up drafts with editor feedback and author comments.
Did you find that your editors made significant changes to the voice of the piece, and/or do you find any aspects of their editing process particularly notable or unusual?
Can’t wait to read this one, and hope the HN crowd treats you well.

Well, this piece was in The New Yorker, which is reasonably priced and regularly includes excellent investigative journalism. I get the physical copies, which can be too much to keep up with if you try to read everything, but it’s easy enough if you skim and just read the things that stick out as being of particular interest.

I've been mostly off the GitHub train since the MS acquisition, and think any alternative is a good alternative. Codeberg is great.
I've also been very happy with sourcehut for most of my personal projects for some time. The email patch submission workflow is a tad bit unfamiliar for most, but IMO in today's era raising that barrier to entry is mostly a good thing for OSS projects.
I also strongly prefer a simple CI environment (where you just run commands), which encourages you to actually be able to run your CI commands locally.
