Does anyone recommend an alternative? We've already moved our runners to blacksmith, looking for a control plane as well. We are tiny startup that ships at high velocity and this kind of downtime is highly disruptive for us

Something that has always stopped us from migrating away from Slack is the integrations. We have 10s of integrations on Slack and those are a pain to migrate. Any thoughts or plans on how you would support that?

Great idea, a couple of comments. - please let us know how you source your ingredients. Spinach is one of the more pesticide ridden vegetables. And bad quality dairy may do more harm than good. - Seitan and tofu are not particularly healthy. Gluten and soy are known to be inflammatory foods and cause a lot of side affects. Would love to see a dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, organic version of this. Then it’s a truly hearty meal that I would order

The data is not always in the same location, and the images/documents are user submitted, so no guarantees about resolution. I'll continue to look for off-the-shelf solutions. If I were to invest in doing this myself, what would you recommend? Are there any books/courses that'll help me with the foundations?

I have no background in machine learning or computer vision. What I do have is a problem statement. I want to be able to parse and get structured text out of financial documents like W2s and Paystubs. For ex)parse out company name, salary etc from a W2. Off the shelf solutions like AWS Textract doesnt work very well. So far I have only been treating OCR as a blackbox. If I were to build an OCR service myself for a specialized set of financial documents, what theory and tools would I need to learning assuming I have a CS background, but not an ML background? Thanks in advance

Ask HN: What are you doing about the impending “big” earthquake in the bay area?

Is anyone else worried about the "big one"? Real estate seems to be doing great and the economy, in general, is doing great, and people seem to be either completely ignorant or unperturbed by the earthquake situation. Has anyone thought of leaving the bay area? If yes, where are you planning to go? If not, what are you doing to prevent/control damage? We are thinking of moving out of the bay area and wondering if there are others in the same boat and looking for other places in the country/elsewhere with good tech jobs and less probability of natural calamities.

I have been living in the bay area for over 6 years now, and have worked in small and big companies as a software developer. Although the bay is awesome if you are a developer, San Francisco and the US in general is lagging behind other countries in terms of livability compared to many other countries in Europe. work-life balance takes a hit, health insurance is not free, public commute sucks, education is expensive etc. I have been thinking about moving to Europe to experience the lifestyle there. Many countries in Europe (Vienna, Switzerland, Germany etc) consistently show up in the list of most livable countries in the world published by multiple sources. I am wondering what the best way is to find developer jobs in these countries, and if anyone else out there also is thinking/thought about this

We have been using docker for about a year at Demandforce, Intuit. We have had a mostly positive experience with it.

Plusses:

- Dont see any environment related issues because the docker image is the same in every environment

- Easy onboarding to teams that use docker because you dont need to setup anything new. This is especially useful if your company encourages developers to work across teams

- Ops can build around infrastructure around this and be sure that every team builds and runs code in the same way

- If your application is complex, using docker-compose, its extremely simple to setup your dev environment

- The community is moving towards docker, and it doesnt hurt your resume if you have production docker experience

Minuses:

- For an extremely simple application (that you think will remain simple over its lifetime), it might be more overhead to use docker than not use it

- Even though we’ve been using boot2docker and vagrant to setup docker on MacOSX, it hasnt worked seamlessly. When you get on and off a vpn for example, boot2docker has constantly messed things up. If you can get your dev setup right, docker works well. If not, it can be a pain sometimes on OSX

- Although its easy to build docker images for most of the open source software out there (if docker images dont already exist), it can be a pain to do that for enterprise software. Try using docker with oracle db. You might get it to work. You wont have fun with it !!
