Yes, but you are in a better position to leverage this technology than an employee, the potential value you can extract from AI is higher. Regarding competition, software was never the moat in most cases, so I don't think more software equals more competition, at least not linearly.

AI is increasing productivity. Companies are positioned to leverage this, employees are not, as they'll still work the same hours, maybe now producing more.
The way to better leverage this is to build your own company, I know this is not as simple as saying it but the gap is widening and it doesn't look good for employees.

Plan A -> this year I've started a company on the side, planning to leave my job before the second half of 2027.
Plan B -> keep trying to get jobs in software, trying to adapt to still bring some kind of value to the table.
Plan C -> run my parents kindergarten, but the birth date drop is making this option challenging.
Plan D -> real estate broker and fix and flipper.
Plan E -> Buddhist monk

We have an annual performance review period, in the one from the previous year I was thinking about asking for a raise but I didn't do it because my boss told me he talked with the CTO and they decided to give me a raise. The % was a bit lower than what I was going to ask, but it felt weird to ask for more after they did the job and finally decided the number.
Now the new performance review is coming and I'd like to ask for another raise but I don't know when it's the right time for it. I'd like to avoid the previous year experience.
This is the process:
1) I have to do an self evaluation
2) My manager does his evaluation of my perf
3) My manager talks with other people to "calibrate" my perf
4) We have the perf review meeting
Last year my idea was to talk about it after (4) but I don't know if it'd be better to talk about it in an earlier stage.
What do you think?

Hi folks, I’m a software engineer and I’ve been building AI related products for the last five years.
I had a meeting with the company owner (ex work colleague) some days ago, the company has like 30 employees and they develop traditional software products and they also do some outsourcing. He asked me if I was willing to join the company as a partner in order to build an AI division inside the company, focused on building data and AI products. None of their current employees have experience with this type of technologies.
I’m interested but I’m not quite sure that the company will be able to focus on two different lines of work, with different life cycles and different development metodologies.
Do you think that the proposal makes sense?
Do you have experience doing something like that or know a similar case from the web?
What would you do if you were in my position to approach this kind of job?

I've been working at a new job for about two and a half months as the first data scientist of the company and now my boss wants to look for another one. I was given the option to choose which kind of tasks I'd like to perform from now on in order to look for someone who could complement with me.
And we're also getting a frontend/backend implementation team.
I've been doing the "whole" stack: gathering and cleaning data, building the backend, researching, validating the different models...
At a first glance, I'd say that it'd be better to focus on the big picture: help define what we need to do to solve different business problems and think about ways to solve them, leaving the "implementation" stage to the other data scientist.
I think that I'm better for this kind of tasks and that also it's a better skillset to get more autonomy and leverage, but maybe I'm seeing it wrong.
What do you think? What path would you choose?

I'm working full time as a data engineer/scientist but I also have one ongoing customer (a previous employer).
Another previous employer is launching a startup and has recently pinged me because they need to build a series of data pipelines and ML models for their product.
I've to talk to them about specifics but I don't see myselft having enough available time to make it work.
I've been thinking about starting my own data/ml services company for a while but I don't really know when to make the jump. I think (is a guess for the time being) that the income from this new job, in addition to the income of my current client, could be enough for my living expenses of this year, so I'm thinking if this is a good time to make the jump or not.
The problem that I see is that this new lead is from a previous partner of my current client, so both jobs are related to my previous employer, I don't have a pipeline of possible prospects for my service, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to generate a pool of prospects while doing the work for this customers.
My guess is that I should wait until there is a sign that I could probably get a stream of clients to keep the wheel going, and try to find the time to take this new job, maybe negotiating terms to make it possible.
What do you think?
Edit: I've savings already as I plan to buy a new home (I'm in Argentina, we buy it cash, no mortgage). I need three more months of salary to accomplish the home budget.

I'm working as a data engineer and I realized I lack some skills when interviewing for a new job: design patterns, good practices, object oriented design, query optimizations...
On my job I'm very deep into SQL queries, so it's difficult for me to learn those kind of skills on the job. So I'm feeling stuck.
I'd like to make some courses and read some books in order to brush up on that kind of skills but between my full time job and my one year child I've almost no free time to spend learning.
So I'm looking to optimize my learning path, finding myself on a paralysis of choice: I don't know if the best would be to start reading books, getting through a series of online courses or practice by reading OS code. It'd be great to learn those skills on an incremental way, a bit of every skill for each iteration.
What would you recommend?

A friend of mine is starting a position at a new startup whose founder is a former colleague of him. He recommended me, we had a quick interview and I've already received an offer.
As the title says, the salary is almost half of what I'm earning at my current job so clearly I'm not considering it, but before rejecting the proposal it'd be nice to give it a shot and see if they can improve the offer. I'm pretty burned out from my current job and it'd be great to move to another place.
Have you dealt with a similar situation? How do you handled it and what was the outcome?

Hi folks, I've been working as a software engineer for about 10 years but always in small companies with few or none programmers or as a freelancer. I've been able to always have work on my desk because I'm always moving and talking with people in the industry but some months ago I decided to go to work on a proper medium software company.
I'd been assigned a medium complexity task and I've failed to accomplish it, the code was all filled with hardcoded values, wrong structure, difficult to debug bugs and similar things.
I've realized I'm not a senior software engineer as I thought and now I don't know what to do next. If you read my resume it'll seem I am a senior but I don't really know where to place me in the "experience" spectrum. I've always managed to solve the problems in front of me but in a "hacky way" and now the issue was totally revealed to me.
I'm thinking about looking for semi senior roles but I'm afraid it'll look weird for the company interviewing me to hire a semi senior with +10 years of experience.
I've also thought about transitioning to a PM role but I'm not sure if I can be a PM if I'm not able to code things the right way myself.
A third option would be to take a break from work and try to learn to write good code but I'm not sure it's possible without working on a company with other people.
As you very probably see, I'm quite lost right now so I'd be very grateful if you can advise me what I could do next with my career.

Hi folks, I've been interviewing for several weeks looking for better income and challenges.
