What has happened to my country disgusts me so deeply I am losing my will to live. The only thing to be hopeful for are the midterm elections and I feel like it is foolish beyond reason to expect that to become a magic wand. Hell is empty and the devils are all here.

in time, student tests will consist entirely of in-class written essays to avoid AI usage, which professors will then grade primarily with AI tools to handle the workload. this will be deemed ‘fair’.

Fewer readers, fewer writers, it’s a constructively deprecated medium.

A lot of the people who would’ve blogged fifteen years ago only make patreon/yootoob/ig videos now.

Yet I agree with you, the slow death of good prose is a sad thing to see.

article ignores the reality that the vast majority of calls anyone receives nowadays are scams of one form or another

they aren’t the simple telemarketer scams of yesterday; many are sophisticated attacks with high-consequence outcomes that require considerable effort to navigate, if engaged.

Disengagement is currently an important survival tool.

This soundbite is pure narrative. Most of the security of hi-side systems was simply being air-gapped. It is otherwise full of COTS software, much of it quite dated. You don’t need a fancy widget to break into them, simple access for a competent pen-tester is adequate. Don’t treat the fear-mongering as a scientific revelation; it ain’t.

Yes; the past decade has cured me completely of my capitalist sympathies. Put Marx/Engels back on the menu, though I’m sure attempts to implement centrally-planned economies will again degenerate as badly as they did with the Soviets. Our Sisyphian torments will continue unabated.

Correct, the authorization was only needed for the govt to spy on you directly. Private business has no such restrictions, the govt can now buy any info from Palantir, Google, Lexis, ad infinitum
