What a story. I never had a chance to play with System 6.0, my first one was Mac OSX Maverick...before DOS/W95-98/XP and Debian/Ubuntu...what was it like?

This is so nice and resonates with me deeply. For quite a while I have been stuggeling to love modern computer. When I was reading this, I saw myself - this is more or less me. We got a 386 when I was 4, and as much as I can remember I was playing DOS games and later on Windows I have been exploring this whole concept of computers and dreaming about writing a game or learn how to program. This was so transformative. I remember the whole hacker like community - tweaking registries, shareware on floppy drives, demo scene, the dawn of the internet, Altavista - yes no Google, every generation was a leap forward. Golden time? Maybe I romantize it too much? I don't know, but I remember I was technology positivist and loved computers. How am I suppose to love the machine that is snooping on me and selling my behavioral data to 3rd party and making people selling me ads based on this rich. Every app needs an account, now also age verification - what the ***. I want my computer to be mine. I want my data to be mine - how did we let happen all of that...Apologies for the rant :-) today's technology is equally exciting and cool, but one have to be careful about it much more. After reading this, I am certain I do love computers...but for few years now, I was a bit in lethargic mode thinking I once loved the computers.

This is super nice article. Will revisit this one more time and try that out as well. In the age of AI slop, it is such a pleasure to read actual people blogs about what they do and are passionate about. Thank you this one!

As much as I avoiding any Microsoft technology at any cost. I do have a gaming rig at home, and yes I have Windows on it. I only use it to launch Steam and GOG, nothing else except the casual web browsing. I have been driving Arch btw and was fine, but these days you CAN install Windows 11 locally without Microsoft account. So I took it a shot for better game compatability.
This is not Linux/Window flame. I am trying to say, local account is possible and is working.

Totally. I feel the author, we just used to nerds, but now the space is occupied by social media and false narrative that revolves around founders. No ego hurt here of course - but it is hard to imagine Woz or Stallman to ask for a mass surveillance program or ads in AI or pushed AI search in internet search. I believe this article actually went to this realm - tech for tech, having fun…but all we get is maxxxx enshitification.

I stopped using that software no matter how painful it was some games included. I wanted to play BG2 and the remake from GOG just litter the Documents folder even when running though Wine. Well, no game for then. Pity. I want my computer to serve me and to have my own files where yo want them.

True, search took a shot too. I am on DDG - not perfect, but at least I can I don't know...search the internet and not talk to LLMs about it? I am not anti AI, I am using AI a lot - I also search things occasionally in ChatGPT, but when I go to search the internet I want to go to search to the internet. Gmail I don't use for very long time, having my own domain and using email elsewhere...only YouTube is something I keep returning back.

I hear you, me personally I only use Fedora when it comes to Linux. It is easy to install, has everything I need. I keep everything default - maybe change wallpaper and install my apps and IDE. That is it. From this standpoint it is MUCH better than a Windows box for games, which always has some ads, long update, sometimes it breaks, a lot software is actually writing their config in "My Documents" folder which bugs me a lot AND I do not have to have Microsoft account (actually I don't need any account on that matter) to create a local account on my own computer. So yes, I would agree with inferiority argument almost completely. If Linux got a bit mainstream, the ecosystem and apps would follow very quickly I am sure. But Microsoft is trying hard to people try out Linux (which is good btw) so let's see. Myself, I am off to Fedora even for the games, I am done with Copilot and inability to have offline account.
