It did install, but then would hang when trying to configure the provider (specifically I was trying diffusiongemma via Nvidia). I gave up after a couple of attempts and moved to the next one.

Good timing, I was looking for alternatives earlier today. opencode didn't install properly and I wasn't a fan of oh-my-pi and nanocoder.
MiMo code (via my z.ai coding plan) is very pleasant so far, nice UI and seems to respond faster than Claude Code. It might be injecting much less cruft into the conversation.
I also got access to the mimo-2.5-pro ultraspeed model yesterday, which is really quite snappy. It does cost more than DeepSeek, though, so I'm not sure whether it's worth it yet. Definitely fast though.

It's shady because they were going to silently poison your outputs.
It's actually worse than it sounds initially, because Fable isn't actually omniscient when it comes to safety classification. Many people (myself included) had refusals or fallback to Opus 4.8 for seemingly compliant/innocuous requests.
Wouldn't you be pissed off if they decided to sabotage your project despite having done nothing wrong?

Call me a cynic, but I don't believe this is a genuine change of heart at all. It feels much more like a panicked response to something that might undermine their IPO.
Even if you trust Anthropic today (which I don't), they clearly don't want competition and there's no telling what other shady moves they'll pull in future.
The only sustainable way forward is to support open models. I was already on the fence about whether or not to keep my Max subscription (the extra cost over something like DeepSeek V4 didn't really feel justifiable). This is the tipping point for me, I'll be cancelling my sub before it renews at the end of the month.

Opus 4.6 was a 2025 model and many people (myself included) feel that if that's where models peaked, we won't be disappointed.
Even at 2-bit quantization, DS4 is probably on par with a 2024 frontier model. You can run that today on local hardware, and at a minimum, local models are going to keep pace over the next 12-24 months. Even if they don't close the gap with frontier models, they'll still play an important role in the overall pipeline for cost, speed and privacy reasons.
That's without even mentioning the additional capability that something like a Taalas chip churning out 17k tokens/sec could unlock.

As much as I like Valve, it's difficult to ignore how large a part they played in shifting the PC market towards F2P.
I bought TF2 with the Orange Box, and for a few years it was amazing. Then it went F2P with hats, and overnight the player base turned into a cesspit (and the hats themselves completely ruined the aesthetic that they spent years painstakingly crafting).

Slightly OT, but after using DeepSeek V4 Pro for the last few weeks, I’ve found that it’s basically on par with Opus…except when it comes to driving Blender. This isn’t even a visual issue (DS isn’t multimodal), for whatever reason Opus just understands the Blender API a lot better.
There always seem to be pockets where closed frontier models perform slightly better.

I’m not going to pretend it’s on par, it’s clearly a step behind when it comes to thinking and planning.
However, it’s a very good “doer” - if I give it a list of well-scoped tasks, I can usually rely on it to execute them all correctly.
