How would this be virtue signaling?
Anyway, I think we should want to build efficient things. Dismissing this doesn’t seem terribly productive.

Sorry, the "re-implemented" wording might have been a bit strong in my last comment.
Take a look at this recent pull request into the TP decompilation repo:
https://github.com/zeldaret/tp/pull/3155/changes
The changes are often symbol renames, casts, replacing hard-coded values with enum values, etc...The idea is to map the decompiled output to human-readable source.

This project was made possible by the recent ZeldaRET decompilation project. To simplify, the goal of that project was to create a program whose inputs were the game assets (extracted from a ROM) and to produce ROM output that just happens to be an exact match of the source ROM. In other words, the decompilation project re-implemented all game logic.
Dusklight is a program based on the decompiled source code that requires game assets then runs the application natively. It’s highly specialized and would likely never be used to run any other game.

I guess the only difference between this and your example is the concrete efficiency gain from RTL and synthesis tools versus dubious applications of AI. I do agree with the second point about pushing people to explore new ways of doing things though.

I would have been interested in debating the content of your reply if your account had not been created 1 hour ago.
So what about protesting the Russian invasion of Ukraine seems objectionable to you?
> it is fair to say that Notepad++’s freedom to protest would depend on who and what they are protesting.
What? In the US, UK, and Australia, the right to protest (i.e. of speech) does not depend on what’s being protested in the way you’re implying.

I don’t see it as a waste of my time. I am not in the habit of seeing conflicts in which innocent people die as a “waste of my time”. The idea that my time is somehow more valuable than another person’s is narcissistic.

Not pertinent. My point is more in reference to the ancestor comment with respect to Ukraine and Taiwan:
> Yeah, Notepad++ is known for political messaging in their updates. Taiwan, Ukraine, etc.
If you’re calling Ukraine in particular a “separatist movement”, I don’t think we can have a productive conversation.

> I can't help but feel there must some better venue for such messaging.
I would argue that this has been an effective avenue for messaging/protest. You’re responding to it on this very board - that means you’re thinking about it.
Another angle: would such free protest be allowed if the developers of Notepad++ were based in China or Russia? I seriously doubt it.

They referred to Microsoft’s known practice of embrace, extend, extinguish a “conspiracy theory” in a sibling thread, so they’ve essentially lost credibility. I don’t think genuine feedback is going anywhere useful.

I agree with many other replies here, specifically about accessibility. Once I learned how to use a screen reader, it was eye-opening. So many web applications are utterly broken for users with assistive technologies.
Tables built with flex and grid absolutely can be made accessible with WAI-ARIA, but native table elements are harder to mess up.
