No they don’t. What happens is that people want to manipulate the market for a variety of reasons, so they do that, and then really really smart people come along later and try to claim that those manipulators weren’t actually the problem but the solution! It is completely backwards, like reversing cause and effect. It’s like blaming a person for standing in the path of a bullet instead of the one firing the gun.
Want a free market? Stop messing with it.

Vibe coding requires the sota models to work at all, but someone who knows what they are doing and uses the AI more responsibly can absolutely use the cheaper Chinese models for coding, and they’re often faster too. If I was one of the big players my entire focus would be on lobbying for regulation and outright banning of local models.

> It's widely understood that the big players are making profit on inference.
Are they? Or are they just saying that to make their offerings more attractive to investors?
Plus I think most people using agents for coding are using subscriptions which they are definitely not profitable in.
Locally running models that are snappy and mostly as capable as current sota models would be a dream. No internet connection required, no payment plans or relying on a third party provider to do your job. No privacy concerns. Etc etc.

Also, wtf are people doing with their lives where a significant amount of time is spent on stuff like this? It only takes a few minutes to book a flight or hotel/airbnb. Shopping for things can be fun, and if it isn’t, again, a few minutes. The amount of time that a “personal assistant” would save me is minuscule and probably actively harmful.
Are people just so addicted to doomscrolling or whatever that they just can’t spend a few minutes of their day doing some type of human activity?

I’m so glad I’m not a professional software developer because this stuff is so god damn stupid. This whole industry is a joke. I migrated my working site to a JavaScript framework. Oh look, a company vibe coded a Wordpress replacement yesterday, I migrated my site to that. Are there any serious people left? Or will I have to suffer the AI delusions every time I open a website or run an app or program? Is it even possible to live a “modern” life without using software? Because I’d like to. For my own sanity.

Wordpress gets you into trouble all the time imo. There are better solutions out there. Every headless cms I’ve used has been much less of a headache compared to Wordpress. I wish I could share your optimism on it, but man, it’s a real pain.
Perhaps what keeps it so dominate in the space is its plugin ecosystem. You can pretty much do anything with it with off the shelf plugins, and a metric fuckton of duct tape. Headless options are way better, but you need to implement stuff yourself. Which of course is a massive barrier in many cases, but when you have the ability to do so, it’s almost always better to do so.
