It boggles my mind that an LLM "understands" and acts accordingly to these given instructions. I'm using this everyday and 1-shot working code is now a normal expectation but man, still very very hard to believe what LLMs achieved.

A faulty break pad or an engine doesn’t take decisions that might endanger people. Self-driving cars do. They might also get hacked pretty thoroughly.

For the same reason, I’d probably never buy a home robot with more capabilities then a vacuum cleaner.

A naive question: So much “tax payer” money is going towards research funding. But it looks like private companies are reaping rewards, mostly as a new drug. Why is this research not (mainly) privately funded?

I was chatting with Gemini 2.0, not logged in. Was looking for a company name. While brainstorming, it suggested one of the names is especially good because it also connects well to the town I live in. When I asked how it knew, it lied, told me I told it. When pressed further, thanked and attempted to change subject. omg

Depends on your role. Assuming you are their direct supervisor, simply give more tasks. Slacking off is usually due to not enough to do. Follow the tasks at a high level, make sure he knows he’s being tracked. This has even the effect of increasing motivation, as most people value attention.

If slack off means he’s not showing up at team meetings, constantly missing deadlines, low quality of work, etc.. just give feedback on a case-by-case basis, ask how he would make it better next time.

If he fails to improve and the examples pile up, time to make hard decisions. I have to say, in my experience as a direct supervisor, only 1 out of like 4 people fail to improve, if you are willing to invest your time and effort.

This is actually bad advice for the "marketing professional" case for two reasons in my opinion;

* Author directs his client (?) to create hypothesis out of thin air and start testing them. This is how you loose time and money. The missing step in between is observation before hypothesis creation.

* In a workplace setting, the #1 thing you should do is to ask for feedback from your supervisor, incase you feel something is wrong or you have a performance problem and don't know what's wrong.

In USA people can make these calls with much autonomy. In Korea, leaving before your boss is hard to do. In Germany working hours are hard capped and that’s absolutely normal to stop working when your weekly allowance is over.

Some things make sense only because that’s your cultural normal.

I wanted to replace my old gas range with a good induction cooktop. Everyone told me that would reduce my homes value, electric ranges are a step back.

I think problem is the induction ranges aren’t properly marketed. They have an image problem not a regulatory one.

It‘s a pretty safe car for the driver and passenger. The modern tech generally avoid accidents (notably esp,abs, ebd). Keep your beakes & tires in a good shape, check the integrity of your seat belt ( loose screws, torn belts) and airbags(if any).

I’ve read a great sci-fi short story regarding how far this could go. There is this device that alters your image to fit the “dominant culture” or the “appropriate etiquette”. You can crank it up to the point where you practically become someone else. It also feedbacks and directs your body language etc. I wish I could recall the stories name.

I’m currently in Turkey. I can transfer funds from any bank account to another in about 1 sec., for a very low or no fee, 7/24. I can even withdraw money from an ATM w/o a card just by scanning a QR code from banks app. All merchants have adapted contactless visa etc.. payments. I honestly don’t see how crypto has a sliver of chance as payment alternative.

And by the way the amount of people interested in playing huge simulations makes me think that we living in a simulation because someone likes to play it might not be that sci-fi. At least even we have a kind of drive and motivation to build and play such a thing.
