I love this book! The part about the implication of digitized minds and long distance space travel was really eye-opening. It really makes you understand that, no, aliens are not visiting earth.

We need to differentiate between a "What this is" comment and a "What this does" comment. "What this does" is a lot closer to "Why" than it is to "What this is". I would hope "What this is" is rarely needed but "What this does" can certainly be helpful pretty often.

Just the other day I was thinking this hasn't been posted to HN for a while. I'm glad to see it again. Although I feel no need for religion in my life, I recognize that most people seem to need it. So why not this? I think it's better than any of the other ones.

I've used both of these a lot, Marp being really easy to get started with and Slidev being a little more complex but well worth the (minor) effort. To me, presenterm doesn't appear to offer any compelling features compared with these.

Yes, this exactly. In fact, we need a new term to describe the type of "cult" that pushes this agenda (probably the goal is just to get impressions/retweets more than an actual agenda though).

Human languages are full of idioms that have origins that no longer relate at all to the way the terms are used. It doesn't make them wrong or less useful.

I love this song and I feel so lucky I was able to see it live at their final Japan show last spring! They come out for an encore like "we're just gonna do one more song" then play for another 20 minutes.

I agree that urls for this sort of thing are unreliable and there is some merit in requiring the reader to type the code in manually but how about putting an outrageously complex QR code in the book that you can scan to get a copy of whatever function or class the author is trying to demonstrate?

In Japan, they're not banned but there's an extra 2 or 3 yen charge if you want one. This charge amounts to just about nothing but it was enough to get almost everyone to switch to "eco bags". I suppose it's not the "savings" of a couple yen here and there that motivated people to use their own bags but simply the awareness that there was something of an expectation that they would bring their own. Prior to this, you might have looked a bit eccentric bringing your own bag to carry your groceries in but now it's just normal and Japanese love nothing more than being normal.

Ah! I think I get it now. The question you have a problem with isn't "Why?" but "Why me?", right? I still think that, even in the context of the aftermath of some disaster or trauma, it's a good idea to ask "Why?" but it has to be an open-minded, impersonal "Why?". "Why did this happen?" rather than "Why did this happen to me?"

The part I don't get is where he says "Why" is an arrogant question. I think "Why" is usually the most important question. What about it is arrogant? Am I just too arrogant to see it?
