New York has yet to be run into the ground, so I think it would be ok.
Your talking point about NYC being some sort of hellscape is at least 30 years out of date.

Odd that the specific example you chose is better in NYC than Miami. The news orgs constantly harping on urban crime rarely mention Miami, for some reason. Maybe because Miami has a Republican Governor, state legislature, and mayor while NYC has a Democrat in each of those roles?

Sounds like it’s not very widespread at all. How many magazine editors are there in the US?
Maybe don’t call others “stupid” when your entire post is creating fictional villains.

For the Californian, you also need to factor in the $10-15k in health insurance costs. That cuts pretty deeply into the $21k surplus.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/184955/us-national-healt...

None of those prove “effectively insolvent” and most are false, anyways.
Chicago population grew according to 2020 census. Then the Census Bureau acknowledged that was undercounted. Any "news" on this is likely using the admittedly bad calculations to push a narrative. [1]
Taxes aren’t particularly high for a city. There is no city income tax and property taxes aren’t in the top 10. [2]
The pensions are absolutely an issue, but huge progress has been made in the past 5 years and they are making actuarial payments as of now. They got a bond rating upgrade recently and are solidly investment grade.
"On October 21, 2022, Fitch Ratings upgraded the City of Chicago's general obligation bonds from BBB- to BBB. This was Fitch's first upgrade of Chicago general obligation bonds in 25 years due to the City's improved financial condition, rather than a change in the rating agency's methodology."
Isn’t this just dependent on the political views the person brings to the movie?
Recent history has shown us that any narrative can be termed “political” if it helps one side drive a narrative.
Just look at the faux outrage over induction ovens and banning beers. Completely fabricated nonsense used to drive a narrative. This is the true trope.

Those same conservatives happily supported the Southern Strategy which is what this sentence references. One political party made this a basis for their platform for decades.
