His last blog entry was a tough read this morning as I sit at my desk for another day at the long day factory wondering if I should be doing more with the time I have because you just never know when it is up. RIP.

> Sometimes new design phenomena slip past even those of us who are most in tune with the happenings of the built environment.

I went to Wayfair and searched ceiling fans and holy moly this space has changed! I thought to myself, "I don't see these when walking through my local bigbox hardware store?" So I went to Lowe's website and fandeliers are an entire category now.

Same here. I see so many people obsessing over the latest most state of the art bleeding edge models and yelling at Google for not being there, but I feel like the vast majority of people don't actually need those models. Flash has just been super useful and incredibly fast in my experience.

New comment by owlninja in "I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]"

owlninja — Mon, 10 Aug 2026 00:20:12 +0000

This is a funny but sad coincidence! I'll chime in the same as others, I've had tinnitus for 20+ years and I know it is all due to one event. Somedays if I am tired or stressed it gets worse, and then some days I have so much going on I don't think about it (much). But sometimes when I have a calm moment or if I am on vacation trying to relax, I really have no idea what silence sounds like anymore.

I love stories like this. A subtle reminder how inconsequential our actions are on this planet in the grand, unplanned scheme. I look forward to reading HN with my breakfast each morning then going to a job that helps me raise a family and have fun on the weekends. I read stories of war, corruption, sadistic leaders, and great suffering. I've learned to appreciate the joys of life and have come to terms that we are not here for a long time - just for a good time.

owlninja — Wed, 01 Jul 2026 16:52:17 +0000

I just pre-ordered the 4K UHD remaster of The Sopranos, and while on the Gruv site I saw another UHD remaster of a movie I enjoy and ordered it. I am excited to experience this (haven't watched physical media in forever), but I was planning on using my PS5. My research also confirms that standalone players are legit, but they are more expnsive than I figured! I guess I'll give one a try and hope this isn't another addiction...

New comment by owlninja in "Polymarket has flooded social media with deceptive videos by paid creators"

owlninja — Tue, 23 Jun 2026 01:51:34 +0000

I read a book this year about sports gambling in the US [1], and it points out how nasty and predatory it is. I think "prediction markets" have even less regulation? I would talk to my sports fan buddies at work and they would say "oh, just how sportsbooks in Vegas operate already", but this is on-demand, in your face, constantly nudging you to bet with dark patterns and "comps". I used to want sports gambling legal in the US, but the way it has gone is incredibly disgusting and is starting to make watching sports almost annoying. The crawl on the bottom is no longer scores, but moneylines...
