Reading computer scientists' takes on psychology or social sciences after taking 1 (one) 101 level class and then reinventing the wheel on topics that have been researched for decades is just grating. Where does this come from? We get it, you like to think a lot, but if you're as smart as claim you would've realized you can't solve a topic by just thinking really hard and long about it alone in your room. Gurwinder Bhogal is one of the other guys repeatedly falling victim to it

There is an alarm clock on iOS that used to be a 4 USD or something pay once that is now a monthly fee that I still use every day. It records your sleep sounds and wakes you up at a time when you're not in a deep sleep (you set a n minute wakeup window.)

They added ChatGPT and all sorts of other shit to it unfortunately but the core functionality is still good

I mean, I get the reason behind it and I honestly don't know if it's a good or a bad thing, but the idea of pseudoephedrene sales being monitored like that is so foreign to me. I bought cold medication in pharmacies in 3 different countries always asking specifically for pseudoephedrine and it never occured to me that was a meth cook thing.

Echoing the kind of climate change scenario 5 year old kids have seems kind of cruel the week thousands of people in Libya died of events that are exasperated by the climate crisis. People are already dying of climate related causes, like crop failures and natural distasters.

I used to be in the same boat until i finally bit the bullet and got a phone without a headphone port, but i wish i didnt have to. I don't like using a dongle, for example its easy to lose them when you detach it from the headphones to plug them into your laptop. Charging headphones seems silly to me, wired is more convenient, you can replace the wires and you're not limited to crappy Bluetooth headphone quality

Then you're going to the wrong concerts. Lil Pump? Maybe. (Not to say anything against hip hop as a genre, but i've seen insta stories and as you say they're just seas of phone screens in the crowd. Disgusting)

At good jazz or alt rock concerts people take their phone out to take a few videos and pictures and then enjoy the rest of the show. For the really good concerts they make you put a sticker on the camera of your phone.

Its fine for everybody's needs - unless youre shooting weddings or movies or something no one needs to spend 800+ USD on latest iphone, they can just buy one from a few gens back for less than half of that

I'm in the same boat except that i bought one used. Battery health was also at 83% when i bought it, don't know what its now but lasting a full day so i dont care.

What do you mean "while you still can"? Will they discontinue battery replacements for the 11 at some point? At 80€ its a no brainer once the battery does start to deteriorate more

Only tangentially related, but the new hot shit i recently learned about is "conversational commerce", i.e. services that let companies spam their target markets on messengers like whatsapp in situations like the ones you describe, or when a certain product is back in stock etc..

i think it's an absolutely disgusting invasion of supposedly personal communication spaces. My ex "works" (cold messaging people on linkedin) for a startup that does this and i genuinely don't understand how otherwise lovely amazing people can throw their morals under the bus like that and willingly dedicate 40+ hours of their lives week after week to making the world a shittier place.

Interesting! Without going into personal details, can you explain what sort of incongruence he found between his diary and his memory?

I sometimes keep a diary, for example when I go on long trips that are different from my day-to-day life. I try to be as accurate as possible, but sometimes i notice what i write isn't fully representative of my state of mind at the time, simply because when you're writing stuff down (especially when you're writing with a pen and paper (slow!)), you can never fully capture all the concurrent thoughts and emotions you're experiencing, so its impossible for a diary to be fully accurate. Undoubtedly, e.g. Elizabeth Loftus has done a lot of prominent research in that field, our memories tend to be fallible, but maybe that's part of the reason?

Because human cognition is fundamentally affected and controlled by it's body and its sensorimotor interactions with the environment (read: "Six Views on Embodied Cognition" by Margret Wilson) which LLMs don't have and will never have.
