> The fire chief entered the cistern wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. After reaching the plank platform, he removed his face mask to shout instructions to those on the surface and he, too, was instantly overcome.
Now that one is probably deserving a Darwin Award...

> Winning the War on Climate Change
It's not a war, it's not a contest. There are no "sides" and there's nothing to "win".
It's just adapt or die.
And there are many ways to adapt, it can mean changing ourselves just as it can mean changing our environment.

> Alcohol is far worse because you can become dependent on it in a way marijuana doesn't really allow.
Well, I've seen more people become dependent with hash/pot than with alcohol. I'd say that's because it's much harder to be functional drunk than stoned.
There might not be physical cravings or withdrawal but when someone starts hitting the bong several times a day, all this talk about hard and soft drugs is bullshit. And once they want to stop, the biggest difference is that they don't have the excuse of being in pain physically.

> But maybe heroin wasn't common in Germany and therefore oxycodone was pre- in Germany?
Heroin was first marketed by Bayer, a German pharmaceutical company in 1898. That's where the name 'heroin' comes from so oxycodone was definitely not pre- in Germany.
Now, in nazi Germany, opium and products derived from it might have been harder to come by because of import sanctions (that's why methadone, a fully synthetic opioid, was developed in Germany in 1937). But that would apply to oxycodone just as much as heroin.
So no, the author is just full of shit and trying to impress his uninformed readers.

From DanBC above: At will, secret, testing is banned. Parents can get court orders if they want a paternity test.
The "labs lobbying" comment was kind of tongue-in-cheek: making fun of the "crazies" being paranoid about "crazy feminists"...
The real reason's probably more about bioethics: no dna profiling of people who don't consent without a court order (and children being too young to consent, you need a court order for a paternity test).

> So not really what you would expect from a union in the west
Oh, you know, these days in the West, the big unions are more partners with the governments/employers than they are on the side of the workers.
Many unions have become tools that exists only to perpetuate their own existence, instead of being tools for workers to organize and collectively defend their interests against those of their employers and governments.
