Hi I've been working on a drag and drop web builder for developers. Think of it like a version of Webflow that can sync directly with your code. You can try it at https://dragondrop.app/. It's still currently very much a work in progress. Let me know what you think.

> This is what's behind the paradox where a good dev working alone or maybe with one very like minded person can produce a level of productivity you can't match again as you add developers, till you have way more developers. The dip represents the loss due to having to communicate a common understanding of the codebase, that doesn't get adequately compensated for till you've added a lot more people.
Wow I couldn't agree more with this point. You put it perfectly. I worked alone and later with one other developer on a project and it felt way more productive than my current team of 5 developers!

Despite your negative tone, I think you have a point. There are many project like this. I'm working on another one at the moment and I have compiled a long list of similar projects. There is definitely a need for a tool that can create UIs visually. IMO such a tool needs to have interoperability with code, as in changes to the code reflect in the tool and changes in the tool make reflect back in the code.
We haven't succeeded in creating an intuitive and robust enough tool that accomplishes this, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible. It's a technical challenge which can be overcome.

I have come across this before, searching for a particular problem but not finding the relevant Github issue in google's search results, which made me search using Github's own search functionality inside the relevant repo to find what I'm looking for. I'm not sure why google wouldn't be indexing Github issues though

I definitely agree with this article and believe that life is short, but it's also a good idea to relax and not worry about it all too much. I think the relaxing and having a piece of mind is undervalued by most people. It helps you have a better quality life however short it is. Remember that the time you spend on worrying about how short it is is also part of your life which you are kind of wasting. Having said that I agree that we should consider the bullshit in our life and cut in favor of things that we really want to do, because at the end life is to short for that.

That's true, but it's worth mentioning that income tax also doesn't seem to be a large portion of most country's GDP. It seems to range between 1% to 14%, except Denmark (25%) which is an outlier. See: https://data.oecd.org/tax/tax-on-personal-income.htm#indicat.... The global average is only 8%!
Another interesting fact is that in the graph for corporate profit, Luxembourg actually has the highest rates, which must be because of its small size and huge number of companies that are registered there to benefit from the countries low tax rate.
Despite this I think corporate should be higher judging how much large multinationals earn. Otherwise the income inequality is only going to grow further.

This article says nothing about how software engineering is a "bullshit job". Her only point that comes close is that she once worked at a job where she was building a pointless website, but that only makes her job in that instance "bullshit".
Look all around you and you see almost endless ways that digital systems are transforming and running our lives, every single one of those needed to be engineered, designed and tested by someone, which could have been a software engineer. I think it wouldn't be an overstatement to stay without software engineers our modern life would be impossible.
I often hear complaining that they are going to leave software engineering because of a flawed list of problems, while the real problem lies in their perception of what the profession should be.
IMO software engineering is about solving challenging technical problems, and not necessarily what is created in the process. A lot of what a software engineer does is not apparent in the end result, but is absolutely necessary to get those programs, systems or applications running.
I think there are far worst professions out there, which in comparison achieve so little to SWE.
Working hours does not make any job a "bullshit" one, and the working hours and the pay grade of a SWE are obviously far better than most job. The parts of the article talks about SWE from a completely biased and personal view, which almost have no value to the reader.
I'm surprised that such article would even be by on HN's first page!

The author definitely has valid arguments about web's security but I think the rest of his arguments are all lazy, anecdotal and not accurate. Comparing Google Docs to an old version of Office for example. They are incomparable firstly because they are running on completely different platforms. Office would take a long time to install while Google Docs are available almost instantly, they can be updated almost instantly and secondly include many more benefits that come with being part of the web.
I have myself developed GUI application using author's beloved C++ and Qt and I can admit its a far better designed and convenient experience compared to the web, but it's hardly possible to achieve the same amount of flexibility in UI/UX design that is available on the Web. I think the fact that things are changing so fast, standards are badly designed (at least initially) and there are so many inconsistencies are all only because web is a fast moving platform that requires the consensus of many players to happen and move forward. Also the amount of commercial interest and developers working on the web is incomparable to other platforms, hence the fast moving nature.
