I have a mix of Sonoff and IKEA. Both work well for me, but the IKEA DIRIGERA API reports the IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE as two separate devices with different names, and it messed up my Grafana dashboard.

It's the most first world of first world problems, but purely for that reason any more I buy will be Sonoff.

So as a non-Apple-using Kagi subscriber since Beta, I kind of wish they'd just concentrate on search - the thing I'm paying for.

Yes, it's good, and I'll keep using it for the foreseeable future, but it's not an unassailable lead.

New comment by petepete in "IBM Bob"

> M.R. Williams is advancing its IBM i modernization strategy with new mobile solutions and accounting system improvements, while leveraging IBM Bob to quickly interpret older RPG code, automate documentation, and streamline development workflows.

This is exactly the kind of endorsement I’d expect to see from an IBM customer.

New comment by petepete in "“It works better in the app”"

petepete — Fri, 28 Aug 2026 15:04:46 +0000

I listen to Radio 4 quite a bit and occasionally want to check the schedule (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/schedules/bbc_radio_fourfm)

On mobile, Googling 'radio 4 schedule' is the quickest way, and the only negative bit about the entire experience is the popup that tells me 'it's better in the app'.

It's not. Not by any metric.

My search and opening a webpage takes a second or two. Opening the app takes several seconds, then navigating to the Radio 4 page and scrolling down the schedule takes several more.

I submitted a bug report on the topic and they basically told me "we hear you but shush and use the app".

Me too.

My two requirements for a device are:

* Being able to pay for stuff

* My blood glucose sensors work (Librelink)

If they worked on a dumbphone, I'd have a dumbphone.

I get several a year (UK). So far in 2026, I've had:

* Jehovah's Witnesses

* people offering to steam clean my roof/drive

* the local Fibre company trying to sign me up.

* well known scammers who claim to be on some kind of prison release scheme selling overpriced kitchen/household tat

Linux doesn't have a way, there are about 30.

Ultimately though, package managers (whether it's apt, dnf, Steam, some app store, etc) are the best for most people, myself included.

I don't think cheese sticks or quesadillas are all that popular in Poland.

I've never had a cheese stick or seen one in a supermarket (UK). I assume from your description it's like a fish finger but filled with cheese.

New comment by petepete in "I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated"

petepete — Mon, 27 Jul 2026 07:07:21 +0000

I have 4 Seiko wall clocks that are radio wave controlled. They look beautiful and other than changing the battery need 0 intervention from me. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Pity they don't seem to make them any more, the newer ones use GPS and don't look quite as nice (in my opinion at least).

It's a Yale Sync

It's not really something I want 'home rolled', I just want it to work.

Same goes for the boiler really. If it stops working I can phone Valliant and they'll send someone round to fix it.

I live by this rule*. Being able to pick up stuff from IKEA that's well supported, well designed and really affordable is a huge advantage.

*almost, I have two things that need an app. My Vaillant boiler and my Yale alarm system. Both apps are terrible, but I have a 10 year warranty on the boiler and my alarm is up to scratch from a home insurance point of view.**

New comment by petepete in "It's a shame what's happened to radio"

petepete — Wed, 22 Jul 2026 07:39:20 +0000

I'm so thankful for the BBC.

I listen to Radio 4 through the day when I'm working on things that don't need my full concentration.

It's the alarm that wakes me at 0630 and I often listen to the news before bed.

Adverts drive me insane. It's a national treasure and I'd pay the licence fee again just for R4 + Sounds.

New comment by petepete in "Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team"

petepete — Tue, 21 Jul 2026 13:12:49 +0000

I've used Jellyfin for years and my experience is currently incredibly smooth and works like a dream for the whole family.

I only use it for movies and TV shows though, the live TV experience (with a HDHomeRun) was incredibly buggy and slow, and once you've tried it and failed, it seems like it's impossible to remove the remnants of it from your interface.

The music and audiobook support never felt like it was as polished as TV/movies either, so I gave up on that.

Now I use:

* Jellyfin for films/TV shows

* Channels for live TV

* Navidrome for music

* Audioookshelf for audiobooks and podcasts
