Look, I've been broke. I've been "figure out how to make a rotisserie chicken feed us for a week" broke. I've been "counting literal pennies to figure out which groceries you can buy" broke. This isn't shaming someone for spending money on candy or soda, or even a cell phone or a flat screen TV.
I even agree that $150 a month is not exactly extravagance, but unless you are disabled, hiring a housekeeper is a major luxury. It's a recurring cost, be it $150/week or $150/month, that can easily be eliminated, and anyone who has been poor would not think twice about eliminating it when things get tight.
And the point isn't that this person is or isn't the "right" kind of poor. It's that they come off as someone cosplaying poverty, and it undermines the premise of the whole article.

$150/cleaning is a perfectly reasonable rate for a housekeeper, but the fact remains, broke people can't afford that. Broke people can't afford servants. Broke people either do it themselves or live in a dirty house.

This is exactly what is happening where I work. The "future", according to company leadership, involves "programmers" directing AI agents to do basically everything, without ever touching the code directly. Sounds abysmal to me.

Kindle's are cheaper because Amazon sells them at or below cost to lure users into their ecosystem. This helps them control the market from both the seller and consumer sides, in keeping with their overall business model. Add to that the fact that you don't really own the e-books you "buy" through Amazon, just like pretty much every other digital "purchase" these days, and that's enough for me to never buy one.
Of course, the general state of e-book devices is pretty abysmal. There are no good options I'm aware of.

I just started trying to get into this, and so far it's been kinda disappointing. I got a couple of heltec v3s, set them up with meshtastic and found zero other nodes in range. I did a range test by carrying 1 node around with me while I walked my dog, and the other one at home. It maxed out at about a block. I know there are other nodes in the area but I can't reach them unless I turn on MQTT, but at that point you're just using the Internet with extra layers. I'm looking into more powerful antennas, etc, but it looks like a big money sink.
