Lockheed has refused to share missile plans with Ukraine on the grounds that Ukraine could make better missiles for cheaper and ruin Lockheed's business.

If they had said national security grounds, it would be understandable. But they didn't. They said American manufacturing is too inefficient and the only moat is keeping the designs secret.

You could even generate a bloom filter for every block, and when you have a full block of bloom filters, write them out to an index file.

systemd is not a collaborative project. It is Lennart's personal cathedral project and you can take it or leave it. That's fine for Lennart, the question is if it's so bad then why are the rest of us taking it instead of leaving it?

The principled excuse for mmap is when you're reading all over a file at high performance and you want to avoid either excessive syscalls or double caching. Which sounds like what a torrent program does but evidently it doesn't even work well for them.

This has already occurred. This has been since Minecraft infdev (2009, now 17 years old). Later on, a limit of 30 million blocks (30000km) in each direction from the origin was added, due to floating-point precision issues and integer overflows in world generation, which get more severe past this point. Integer overflows in world generation caused the infamous "far lands" in versions prior to Beta 1.8.

A manual car is normally in gear while you're driving it. Being jammed in a gear, while catastrophic for your goal of getting to your destination, wouldn't be terrifying like an uncommanded acceleration.

If you were stuck in a certain gear you couldn't shift down to go much slower without stalling (but you can let it stall, if you were trying to stop anyway. You wouldn't be the first car to break down on the highway) and you couldn't shift up to go much faster (but in an emergency you could still floor the accelerator, wasting gas and wearing out your engine much faster).
