If you put around 200-300k into IBKR (not affiliated) you can get portfolio margin which will give you just shy of $2,000,000 in buying power. Access to leverage isn’t really an issue, but forced liquidation definitely is. The bank will not liquidate your mortgage if you end up underwater.

Have you actually looked into "bailing out banks" (which is called Troubled Asset Relief Program), because if you have you would have learned that the US Government actually made ~$15 billion in profit after selling off the toxic assets 6 years later. Not to mention the money the government made thru preferred stock repurchase by corporations and other things (interest etc) the US Treasury booked a total profit of ~$121 billion.
Sorry for calling you out but I'm just very tired of purely emotional responses to this topic because people actually just refuse to go thru the facts of how events transpired and their consequences.
EDIT:
You can see this for yourself from ProPublica

While that statement has a grain of truth (NED having being created as a result of Reagan's NSDD-77 directive) I would rather eat democratic / neoliberal propaganda slop rather than what Russia / China (and their allies) are pushing. This comment kind of reeks of a particular kind of odour that is not quite whataboutism but is very similar to FSB demoralization propaganda. Given your account's relatively young age and other comments I somewhat feel you might have an ulterior motive?

Yeah sorry I was specifically referring to Christchurch Greyfriars. Basically it was as the article said, I was staying in the area (near uh a pub Samuel Pepys I believe) and was walking around and that was definitely one of the things that caught my eye. Maybe such things aren’t as common as I thought
