People pay for meat not from stores because slaughter is a difficult, physically demanding, messy and potentially psychologically distressing job. Not just because "butchers are good at it". All I'm refuting is the statement you made about "people doing it without problems".
Slaughter is outsourced for the same reason people pay nurses to change their sick, elderly parents diapers, it's not a pleasant task. Efficiency might be one reason, but there is more too it.
If you do your research, you will find that in a lot of cultures, taking an animals life was not considered a trivial thing, it had to be done properly, by skilled hunters or butchers, with respect and in some cases, a prayer would have to accompany the task. Take Halal for example.
I've also done quite a bit of travelling and my family also have an agricultural background, so I'm not totally ignorant to the processes and attitudes discussed.

What evidence do you have to support the idea that people "did it with 'no problems'"? Why does the profession of a "Butcher" exist ? How about Hindu's, Buddhists etc?
Maybe people used to enjoy a a more symbiotic relationship with their livestock / prey which doesn't exist now with advent of factory farming, it's just pure exploitation and obviously. I'm sure not everyone in the middle ages or ancient hunter gathered societies would've been fine with that.
Also, the world's population doesn't live in rural areas according to the UN: http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/news/population/world-...

I'm glad someone said this!
Like a lot of cheap goods available presently in the west, they often have a low monetary cost but a high social and environmental cost.
IKEA furniture has had a dubious past, for example [1] and, cheap clothing can be horrendous.
This is really funny (sadly) and too true! If having a decent internet connection is even a slight prirority for someone in Australia, then it's really important to investigate what the internet is like before signing any papers!
If you end up in a bad area, there isn't much that can be done about it apparently. I know people who have spent literally years trying to get an issue resolved.

Even if it wasn't about about "super-fast", people need "super-reliable internet", if relying on old copper, that's probably not going to be a reality. If paying for 25Mbit/s, that is what one should get. Not 5Mbit/s with all sorts of packet loss.
Anyway, it's a real shame. I telecommute for work daily (SRE) and I can honestly say, the NBN rollout hasn't done much to improve my situation. Pulling packages and depdencies, cloning large repos, working with Docker containers and hconference calls are often very average experiences for me. It was really quite problematic while interviewing for remote positions, a laggy conference call doesn't exactly impress potential employers :)
Here is what I often have to work [1], this is about a 2 month old connection and this happens intermittently. I'm just starting the (often long winded), support dance now. I know others who have similar experiences, this is nothing new for a lot of people in Australia.
I guess whatever old and degraded copper lines people relied on before NBN rollout, are still the same old and degraded copper lines after the rollout?
[1] https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C3vGeC5VUAAK0lV.png

I think those graphs seem to present positive and hopeful metrics about the state of the world and the future; However, I also believe they're an over simplification of the extremely complex and interconnected world which live in, glossing over other important issues we face, climate change, mass-extinction events, pollution, inequality, and debt to name a few.
I'm not claiming graphs like that are bad, incorrect or utterly useless, what I am saying is it's important to see things for yourself and formulate opinions based on real, authentic experience. Which is why I enjoy travelling and interacting with people firsthand.
As far as I'm concerned the quote “Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see.” is still extremely valid.
