True - you avoid widespread attacks, but you become super vulnerable for targeted ones.

mutt is still being actively developed. Being on command line doesn't make something legacy. Eudora on the other hand had its latest version out 2 decades ago - it lacks even the most basic security updates (starting from TLS, but many more).

I understand BBC may not have the technical background to critically assess this approach, but whoever using Eudora (I loved it in 2001 btw) for security should get their credentials removed via King's order. Security through "obsolescence" is no different from security through obscurity - therefore, it doesn't work. Somebody not bothering to look for holes in your software doesn't mean they don't exist - in the age of Claude - I am pretty sure I can destroy your legacy software in minutes.

You are naive. Nothing to do with empathy. Everything is cash - warm little cash. No what's lost is - people stopped voting with their wallets. When someone did something atrocious, people stopped buying it. Now - first of all, half of the consumers don't care if PS5 titles are on disc already. And they will not stop when they stop putting things on discs. So why would Sony stop?

Kidding aside, did you pick those 2006 releases at the time they were being released or are you picking them up from a list after years of refinement and discovery? It's completely possible that 2026 will be as fruitful from a 2046 perspective.

Well - ketchup on your disc may drip on the the laser diode - don't you think it's hard to defend against? maybe they need lens wipers against ketchup on the disc issue.

True, but I see how much of a leverage AI tools give - I would like to exploit them as much as possible and only use my experience where necessary (not necessarily when typing code). I can individually instruct Codex or agents to do somewhat complex work and review and merge, but I am wondering if there is a better way to set everything up.

I have been working as a software developer for more than 20 years now. Been around the block a few times. Thanks to generous allowances in my current place, I've dipped my toes into LLM world and am quite impressed with it. However, we are on a legacy code base, LLM impact is limited in a sense. If I was to start a new project (let's say a web app with backend) - what is the state of the art for the setup? From Issue tracking, CI, automated deployments, agents, documentation etc - is there some blueprint I can just deploy and know that I am standing on the shoulders of giants?
