I switched my domain over to fastmail and have been using it for the past hour and seems promising. The interaction with the company is nice too and they seem very much “do one thing well” and doesn’t make me feel scummy like every time I interact with google’s products.

Interestingly I didn’t realize how slow gmail was until switching. Not just the web ui. I use the ios mail app and gmail didn’t support push, only fetch. And the app is 17.8MB (compared to gmail’s 716.7MB). Crazy that it’s 40x smaller.

I also have it pulling to local clients that just keep a few messages. Maybe 30% of the time is webui.

Has worked well for me for 30+ years (substituting telneting in and using pine until webuis existed).

“Email in the cloud mainly” is a useful pattern.

What do you mean by this? It seems pretty likely to be wealthy by investing in these indices. Certainly a “normal” worker who started investing $10k/year in SPY when it started in 1993 has enough wealth to allow them to retire now.

Even if it did, the money would come from global investors who find the US more attractive than their home markets.

10-15x earnings seems pretty massive. But perhaps there is more money in the used lego market than I thought.

They aren’t publicly traded so it’s hard to find out.

It seems like there’s almost no employees and they collect a franchising fee and 6% royalty on the 200+ franchises that BAM claims makes $570k average annual revenue [0].

.06 x 570k x 200 = 6,840,00

So not sure how a $400M valuation comes from $7M/year in revenue.

And this is revenue, who knows what the profit is.

Still, I was surprised there’s 200 franchisees.

I think it’s a real need that people are overlooking.

I’ve been working to teach my kids how important it is to store important records like taxes, ids, home records, etc in a durable store and just get shrugs and “why would I ever need last year’s taxes?”

I think dropbox’s problem is just and prefer it over having to but storage in microsoft, apple, and google’s walled gardens.

I’ve tried fastmail, protonmail, outlook and they all suck. Gmail is probably the only google account I still use.

“Tokens” don’t have an intrisic cost or value. Saying that I used $2,180.16 worth of tokens is like relying on the salesperson to convince me I’m getting a billion dollars worth of pots and pans for $19.99.

I think it’s funny how we are throwing critical thinking out the window when it comes to evaluating biased sources of info.

Compare this to other things and the value yielded is nowhere as near as better purchases.

Also makes me grateful to live in a developed nation where we can take shipping for granted.

I mind ads because they crowd out less profitable margins and result in worse products. Imagine how nice and useful Google could be if they optimized for search instead of ads.
