I tried contact football in 7th grade and only lasted a few practice sessions. I was shocked by what I saw; other kids throwing their bodies into each other as if they were just bags of meat, sometimes colliding head-on. The ferocity with which they did it seemed like a source of pride for them and there was this sense of one-upmanship on who could tackle the best. The whole thing felt insane to me and I backed out immediately. I was involved in other sports like baseball and basketball so I was used to competitiveness, but nothing on that level of disregard for safety.

Who knows, maybe you never would've been a "culture fit" even if you passed the coding test. By the same logic, if only I picked 2 - 4 - 18 - 50 - 56 - 20 on Powerball last week I would be $760 million richer. It's only a few numbers to get right, wild to think I was that close to being rich!

I can confirm that browsing the web is a thing I don't do anymore... because of AI. Reading LLM generated prose all day is not engaging, to me.

LLMs have made the internet unreadable. It used to be just Google search results were SEO-gamed empty prose, but now it's every blog post, news article, product announcement ... everything. I've stopped reading basically everything online except user comments on a few websites. It's the last place remaining to actually connect with other human minds, but even that seems like it won't last forever.

There's been a headline circlulating lately: 80% of Anthropic's revenue comes from 1% of their customers. The $100/mo or however much individuals are paying doesn't seem to be material.

I had a class like this, Discrete Mathematics, with no grades or assigned homework and just a graded midterm and final. It was easily my least favorite class; I didn't know where to spend my time and spent most of the semester wandering aimlessly through the material. The final was very difficult but open book (to help make up for the lack of structure in the course?) and ended up having a ridiculous curve.

Could have also just been a bad professor though.

The public would benefit the most from an American distillation regime. The faster models become a commodity the better. Then it's truly a public good.

This is not quite true. Currently you still need to give them guidance on what type of architecture would best work for your game, or after many iterations on gameplay you'll end up with terrible performance and a complete mess of a codebase. I expect that will be solved sooner rather than later, though.

5 minutes... what about 5 hours, or 5 days? Imagine spending 5 hours with a pen and paper sketching solutions. Unthinkable to spend that amount of time "unproductively" today. I feel like there's just so much pressure to make visible progress, and with these tools available it's getting harder to convince yourself to take the time to think.

Who bears responsibility for the actions of agents seems a little complex. Not in this instance, but in general.

Say I use the summon feature on my Tesla and it runs someone over, am I at fault? You could argue it's not my fault, but I'm definitely getting sued. Is Tesla at fault? Probably but again it's not crystal clear, they could argue it's not their fault (misuse of feature, etc), but either way they're also getting sued.

If Tesla is developing a summon feature and then runs someone over during testing, are they at fault? It would be hard to argue otherwise!

AAA games use allocators extensively, and they are more complex pieces of software with higher performance requirements than nearly anything else out there. So I'm not sure what toy problems you're talking about.

Allocators have been in wide use long before the 2020s but I agree there does seem to be a resurgent interest lately. Although I would argue it's part of a more broad trend of focusing data driven design. Which makes sense because accessing main memory is one of the slowest things your program can do.

Yeah, this whole "we're being attacked by China, they're distilling our models!" thing is completely and utterly absurd. Insulting, even.

Either IP exists and should be respected or it doesn't. And if model training is fairly "transformative" of the source work, then so is distilling. As Garry Tan suggested recently, we need to encourage a US distillation regime. Everyone should be free access and transform this information however they see fit.
