I've an older Mac with some critical apps that runs a slightly obsolete macOS. This OS version is no longer supported by Edge and Chrome 151+.

This did not stop Edge from auto-updating to a known incompatible version and bricking itself.

One minute I had the browser open; the next, the icon was overlayed with the Ghostbusters symbol and could do nothing but display a dialog explaining that my OS is unsupported.

A fluke once perhaps, but this is the third time this has happened to me with various MS apps bricking themselves.

I'm officially done with Microsoft products. This isn't some annoying bug; this is suddenly and abruptly locking me out of my own computer.

Oh please — it's easy when you have the luxury of starting from scratch with unlimited budget.

DOS-based Windows had to both retain backwards compatibility with DOS applications and all their quirks and coexist with them at the same time.

The amount of hacks necessary to pull that off is an accomplishment unto itself.

Remember you couldn't really play games on NT-based Windows until Windows XP came out and even then DOS games were pretty much out until DOSbox came along.

Guess those "adults" had to stick with Solitaire and Hearts.

Thunderbird absolutely sucks now, it is borderline unusable (it would not connect to our internal email system, and I had no patience with its incomprehensible UI to figure out why).

New Outlook is just a web wrapper.

It feels like there are far fewer options in this space than existed 20 years ago.
