Presumably those vulnerabilities resemble known vulnerabilities found in other software.

They literally gave it a proxy to the internet (artifactory). The only thing between the model and the internet was Artifactory.
You can take far greater measures to lock down external traffic than just that.
An offline package cache (aka artifactory WITHOUT its own internet access) likely would have precluded this whole thing.

It really irks me that if a student or intern did this they'd be facing charges and OpenAI gets to just brag instead

So "this kind of speculative thing" isn't cops being bad cops?
What about when they stalk and pull over women they're infatuated with? That's not being a bad cop? You know they do that, right?
This literally does help them hide behind some tool. They can get away with all sorts of rights violations by the nature of "we didn't collect the data, we bought it" in the first place.

I did actually once claim a completely free instance without payment info. It can be done but you're best off using a script, or just sticking to the free limits on a PAYG plan

Oof. Not actually the end of the world for me but i do have two of their free instances that i rely on every day. Lucky for me i mostly just use the functionally unlimited bandwidth they give out for free (VPN to my home server so i can access Plex, Nextcloud etc via my domain name--basically zero CPU, but lots of big file transfers)
My god though, OCI is an absolute shambles, far and away the most awful cloud related UI of any variety I've ever used. Early on i didn't realize just how impossible it was to provision free resources, i got really lucky (probably helps i signed up in the middle of the night? Idk) but i deleted a misconfigured instance that i couldn't figure out how to fix... Took me a couple days to claim another.
They say they don't take prepaid or virtual cards but pretty sure they accepted my Privacy.com virtual card which i retroactively set a $1 spending limit on. I'll still have to go make sure they're not gonna try and charge me though. Can't trust em one bit (except with my VPN traffic lmao)

I replied to you because my point is that it's established law that they cannot come after you for a backup of a title you own, and even the rights holders admit that.
Selling machines that require subscriptions to operate doesn't change the settled law about having backups of things you bought.

The death of the used games market is still a big deal, even if said used games still depend on the manufacturers' networks and licenses being valid. A digital only world where Sony and Microsoft have the only say about pricing and used games are no longer available is a downgrade for users even from the already-bad status quo
