An altimeter or GPS elevation readings and a peak finding algorithm might be more reliable.

> I could give two shits about the "public health crisis". People have agency, they can choose what to do with their lives and their money and I'm okay with the reaping and sowing lining up together.

"I could give two shits about the "public health crisis".

Have you thought about this for longer than a fraction of a second? Hope you don't bother to use any of our public education, health care, or other support systems.

Addiction to drugs, alcohol, and gambling is expensive for all of us in Canada.

> Wayne Gretzky is dead to me because of his support of these ads.

This is just the latest in a long line of shit "The Great One" has done to be an embarrassment to Canada.

New comment by randlet in "Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped"

randlet — Mon, 05 Oct 2026 19:20:34 +0000

My Pixel 8 failed with the exact failure mode (supposedly) covered by that extended warranty [0] program after owning it for 18 months. I had a very frustrating back and forth with Google support and in the end they refused to fix it under warranty because it wasn't manufactured in a specific batch.

Flagship phone turned into a useless device after 18 months of ownership due to a manufacturing issue and I've got no recourse. I'm done with Pixel and Google in general.

New comment by randlet in "Why do you suck at juggling now?"

randlet — Wed, 22 Jul 2026 14:15:23 +0000

This can easily just be gentle ribbing where the juggler and "critic" are familiar/friendly enough that the juggler understands the dude respects his juggling skills and knows the critic is just making friendly banter when he sees him making more frequent drops.

Great book. I really enjoyed the audiobook version which is narrated by the author.

New comment by randlet in "GnuCash is right. It's also why I built my own finance app"

The cadence and wording sure reads like AI to me. OP, personally I find this really off putting and does not make me want to learn more about your app.

New comment by randlet in "Is AI causing a repeat of frontend’s lost decade?"

randlet — Sat, 30 May 2026 00:21:06 +0000

> Software has been transitioning from a craft into an industrial process for the last two decades or so

This seems like a good insight and it feels true to me as well.

My guess is the absolute number of people who treat it like a "craft" is higher than 20 years ago, but as a fraction of all developers it has shrunk dramatically.

New comment by randlet in "I built a 3D printing business and ran it for 8 months"

randlet — Fri, 17 Apr 2026 20:15:04 +0000

I assumed it was AI too

"All of this happened over text—not an organized workflow system, but good enough to handle a weekend’s worth of work, one weekend at a time. For a moment, the business worked. In reality, this was the easy part."

And

"The logo was the Boston Celtics logo. The problem? It’s not a minimal, modern logo; it’s a detailed, hand-drawn image from 1946."

have a pretty AI like cadence.

edit: No shade to OP....I'm glad it's not AI, but I'm sad my default is assuming AI now :/

House was also a wonderful read. In many ways I enjoyed it more than SoaNM due to the parallels with software development but in a completely different domain. Building a house is remarkably similar to building an application.

His whole catalogue is fantastic really. Definitely a favourite author of mine.

New comment by randlet in "Throwing away 18 months of code and starting over"

"bugs were appearing everywhere out of the blue. The codebase was a huge mess of nulls, undefined behaviour, bad error handling. It was so bad that we actually lost a client over this."

Especially wild considering their product is literally an automated bug finder lol.

New comment by randlet in "US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February"

randlet — Fri, 06 Mar 2026 16:24:21 +0000

This is one of the big reasons I won't travel to the US anytime soon, even for work events. I really don't want to be put in a situation where you have to give a border guard access to your phone or risk detention or a future travel ban.
