They do have the power to change things. Institutions can be made more accountable. The people just chose the option to continue with the status quo.

India's education sector is a real shit-show. The rot starts at the bottom: students that resort to cheating, the endless question paper leaks of national level examinations, and curricula that are stuck in the past. All these lead to the problem that affects the country's economic and social development: a lack of foundational research in frontier science and technology, where the country is always a follower and never a leader.
Maybe these things are to be expected, given that even the Prime Minister's academic credentials are suspected to be bogus.

I don't think one has to wait for someone to start a movement. I pick up plastic bottles whenever I see them and drop them in the nearest trash bin that is meant for plastic bottles. I am in Kerala though, which is comparatively cleaner than the rest of India(except the north-eastern states).
The Kerala government is pushing for better waste management now with more trash bins placed at public places and a state-wide effort to segregate waste at the source and collect it from homes.
Still people litter with abandon and it's hard to change ingrained habits.

I think I was a bit hasty in expressing disbelief about your experience. Your team asked you not to set up a development centre in Kerala probably because it was not really known for being industry-friendly at the time. Apologies.

I have a hard time believing that your team who were mostly from Kerala asked you not to set up a development centre there, as IT is pretty immune to militant trade unionism. A lot of companies have development centres in Trivandrum, some were set up more than twenty years ago.
I don't disagree that Kerala was known for being rather unfriendly to big industries, but things are changing. The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry ranked Kerala at the top in 2024 for "Ease of Doing Business Reforms".
https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/2024/Sep/06/e...
As for the clothes manufacturer, I believe you are talking about Kitex. They didn't go anywhere and their factories are still there in Kerala. They did set up a new factory recently in Telengana though, which, along with the rest of the company, is going through a rough phase now because of Trump's tariffs.

Kerala has alternated between a left-wing coalition(the Left Democratic Front - LDF) and a centrist to centre-right coalition(the United Democratic Front - UDF) for a long time. The current major communist party in Kerala, though ideologically Marxist-Leninist, is practically a social democratic one in its policies and actions.

This[0] is the Wikipedia article that ANI has beef with. The claims of propaganda are all supported by ample secondary sources from Indian news organizations like Caravan Magazine and the Ken.
ANI wants Wikipedia to provide the names of the editors that added the details to the article. Once Wikipedia reveals those names, ANI will presumably sue them for defamation and force them to remove their contributions. While the edit history will remain, few are likely to read it.
Suing the editors and forcing them to retract their edits on Wikipedia will have a chilling effect on anyone Indian that tries to point out what ANI and similar organizations are doing. But if Wikipedia blocks India and the issue blows up in the media, ANI will be forced to back off and the article will stay up. Wikipedia then unblocks India. Is it a given that things are going to pan out this way? No, but it's quite likely.
[0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_News_International

I understand that Wikipedia has done this to not lose the possibility to appeal the court's decision. However, if the appeal is not successful and ANI wins, I think Wikipedia should just block India completely. I believe that will blow up spectacularly in ANI's face if everyone comes to know the reason for the block.
Right now only a few people in India know about the ongoing dispute between ANI and Wikipedia. A country-level block is going to bring everyone's attention to the issue which I don't think is something ANI and the incumbent party (the BJP) would want to happen.
India routinely blocks many websites, including many porn sites, but blocking something as big, popular and useful as Wikipedia is not going to go unnoticed by the Indian media.

I remember reading that development of the MCAS system was not done by offshore companies, which was confirmed by Boeing. So saying that $9/hour employees caused the 737 MAX issues is incorrect.
https://www.industryweek.com/supply-chain/article/22027840/b...
Excerpts from the the above article:
>Boeing said the company did not rely on engineers from HCL and Cyient for the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, which has been linked to the Lion Air crash last October and the Ethiopian Airlines disaster in March. The Chicago-based planemaker also said it didn’t rely on either firm for another software issue disclosed after the crashes: a cockpit warning light that wasn’t working for most buyers.
>In a statement, HCL said it “has a strong and long-standing business relationship with The Boeing Company, and we take pride in the work we do for all our customers. However, HCL does not comment on specific work we do for our customers. HCL is not associated with any ongoing issues with 737 Max.”
>Based on resumes posted on social media, HCL engineers helped develop and test the Max’s flight-display software, while employees from another Indian company, Cyient Ltd., handled software for flight-test equipment.
