Yes! Please bring back the soul we had with retro OS GUIs (and the speed)... it's time for a resurgence. Especially with new systems/RAM/GPUs/etc. not being a thing for quite a while for a lot of people now.

I think OP is saying that github, and forges like it, making pull requests so easy, have created a situation where the users bother them too much with said requests. This wasn't always the case with open source, back before community web-based forges were a thing, and it was much more difficult to collaborate from outside the project (where the project has their own regular contributors that do most of the work).

But I don't think most people actually want to just turn off pull requests like they are suggesting... I think that would be disastrous for the open source community as it operates now, and may push people further away to other (maybe even closed) projects.

This is not true... many prominent OSS projects based in the US currently use LLM-generated code, including the Linux kernel, many distros, BSDs etc.

Remember that if there is a complaint such as copyright infringement, that still must go through the normal court process. Only the copyright holder can sue, and not everyone chooses to do so.

They must prove how/why the code is infringing, and then a judge/jury makes a subjective determination on things like fair use, transformation etc. to determine just how similar/different the code is, how obvious it is, if a human is likely to have come up with the same code independently, if there are any monetary damages to collect/etc.

There is no blanket law that says LLM-generated code cannot be copyrighted. And how the model got the code in the first place is largely irrelevant here.

Why not use snapshots/save states so the VMs start back up right away? This is what I do with QEMU.

The more I look into philosophy the more it seems the "enlightened" thing to do is instead pity the people we perceive as stupid because (unless they have a clinical pathology) they are simply misinformed and unaware of that fact (plus the dangers of such confidence).

This also makes it harder and harder to hold grudges against people in general, which I'm on the fence about, because I've had people close to me do some really horrible shit in my time.

I'm not religious, but there is a bible passage that I feel just happens to sum this up nicely:

What maintained forks of Linux are there that actually do their own general improvements and maintenance besides just following along upstream with a custom driver or two? I'm even going easy and only referring to the kernel, even though "Android" is a lot more than that.

Should, yes, but in my experience it rarely is prosecuted. Certainly the police did not care when my home was broken into and had things stolen and vandalized, even when I knew who did it and had proof. And then my insurance dropped me when I tried to claim it.

Entirely depends on the TV IMO... I have no issues installing third-party YT clients on mine.

If people would rather pay money for the convenience, that's fine, I'm not going to stop them... that's what all software is anyway, even FOSS. Every abstraction layer in computing is just another level of saving time.

Nobody gets upset because your C or Python program wasn't written in Assembly, and then claims you're "just coding for convenience." Or when you use someone else's library.

Or, you didn't build your own house brick by brick... and make the bricks yourself, etc.
