Has anyone with this modem in the wild actually confirmed this update was pushed to them and if so is ssh listening on their public IP? So far in the article comments (haven't looked thru HN comments yet), those having this modem have verified that ssh is not listening.

I haven't tried the Spectrum TV streaming service. I'm recently on the one month DTVN trial, and I've actually been quite happy with the mix of channels offered by DirecTV Now, whilst no DVR, and half way decent on demand (although not even close to the on demand provided by the corresponding individual channel TVEverywhere app). It offers ESPN1/2, all the Viacom channels, a good news lineup, OK locals (depending on your region) and a pretty good lineup for the younger kids (Disney Jr, Nick Jr etc), plus essentials like AMC, AE, TNT, et al, all on their entry level $35 plan. The quality of picture and streaming consistency has been excellent on the Roku 3 app, and haven't noticed any buffering problems aside from the normal few seconds when you load a channel. You can access the app away from home (excepting locals if out of region), and you can use DirecTV Now as authentication for any TVEverywhere channel app for which is included in your plan. HBO (or Cinemax) is $5/mo, and you get access to HBO Go with that. I don't have any affiliation with DirecTV Now, I just think it's gotten kind of a bad wrap with the likely premature rollout of the service where most everyone complained of near useless functionality and constant buffering etc. I just haven't seen any of that. Yes there is no DVR, and the UI leaves a lot to be desired and lacks polish, but I think it's the best bang for your buck for a TV service for the entire family, where everyone gets most of what they want, for a very competitive price point.

These kind of generalizations are entirely humorous. Whether remote or on-site works better for someone is entirely situational, and mostly depends on the personality/disposition of the person. For many many people, remote just doesn't work for them for many reasons, and on-site is where they may thrive. Ridiculousness.

Article does mention the child is 2 years old; not sure if that changes the scope of their refund policy/responsibility. However, I would imagine that if this mother wanted to hold the child in her lap for the duration of the do flight, she presumably would not have purchased an extra $1000 ticket. I imagine they'll for sure give her a full refund and then some after the media flack, whilst still making it seem like their actions were acceptable.

"We are providing compensation as a goodwill gesture."
As a "goodwill" gesture?? This makes it sound like she is lucky they might be providing any sort of compensation at all to her. Seems to me that she is due a full refund, since her son was not able to use the seat that she paid for. I don't think the article reveals the age of the child, as I think that would provide some bearing as to the airline's responsibility to provide full refund or not? Once again, airlines (or is it just United) making boneheaded decisions.

Windows replacement shells are a thing (usually, in essence, just an explorer.exe replacement), which is what this is. They were extremely popular in the 2000 decade, but believe the current state of alternative shells has stalled quite a bit in general.
