The main reason it's doing well is because it's basically Disney. Freezers in Japan are tiny and nobody buys in bulk. The experience of going there and buying huge packets of stuff, sharing with friends/family, wrapping and freezing the individual items inside or immediately cooking them to make meals to keep in the fridge - it's a novel experience and has become something of a ritual or hobby among people. Lots of YouTube videos about this. Everyone wants to go at least once just to try it. Many don't go again.

Living in Okinawa I also noticed the proliferation of reseller stores. They charge a reasonable margin and let you buy 4 or 8 muffins instead of 50. It makes perfect sense in Japan.

Incidentally I was disappointed that 90% of Costco Japan's goods are Japanese origin. You'd expect them to be full of American stuff but the majority is not. Even the imports are often the same items you can find in other supermarket import sections.

I find the resistance to be a hindrance when typing. Fastest typing speed and comfort for me is my thinkpad keyboard which uses scissor switches with a very low profile - you need less effort per keystroke!

They know your inbox has 100s of competing senders and their message could get lost, that's why they spam. A large number of people don't curate their inbox, never unsubscribe and just make do reading 20% of their messages.

Same with phone notifications.

It's the dvorak of git... Maybe more efficient but incompatible with everyone else and a very loud vocal minority.

You can find this pattern again and again. How many redditors say 120fps is essential for gaming or absolutely require a mechanical keyboard?

I use Gemini CLI and given the might of all their engineers and AI tools, the features they ship are constantly buggy and broken.

It's so easy to pump out borderline useless functionality with AI that nobody is actually testing or designing it.

If I understand correctly, you had 30 working panels for the core functionality. You then vibe-coded an additional 486 new panels that use fake data? That's not quite how you presented the project in the title.

I reminds me of very early ChatGPT with mostly correct answers but some nonsense. Given its speed, it might be interesting to run it through a 'thinking' phase where it double checks its answers and/or use search grounding which would make it significantly more useful.

The textbook thing was a non issue when I was in college. Previous year books were sold on to the next year, and lecturers gave us page numbers for at least two editions.

I think all of the books for my year were about $150, not just one.

Now I'd assume everyone is using digital books so it might be different.

Hiding most of the items by default and making it really hard to restore it! I had to try 3 different obscure methods to get the old context menu back.

Which just tells me what I already know - Windows is actively hostile to power users, and they should be on Linux. Leave Windows for the less technically confident who need that stuff hidden away.

I introduced it to my friend (who is not technical, and has a RTX 3080), his experience was: he selected a 3:32 song, it took 10-15 minutes trying to scan it. In the end it did a "decent job of removing lyrics from the audio and providing accurate ones" "It seemed to be tracking my singing but there is no mic setup or anything like it" "And I think I accidentally wiped the AI model data it took forever to generate with a single click"

In the end he's gone back to karaoke videos on youtube but it seems promising.

Or if your main sim is an eSIM, there seem to be 500GB/month business sims for effectively £2 a month online. You can't port your existing mobile phone number over, but it's fine for data.
