the learning curve to understanding the fediverse is too high for most people. They just want to log in, have everything in one place, and not care how it got there.

New comment by rocketpastsix in "The Amazon tax"

rocketpastsix — Tue, 18 Aug 2026 14:52:23 +0000

I deleted my Amazon account earlier this year. I have yet to feel like I am stuck and unable to get something. It has made me turn directly to the seller, so it then I know every single dollar is going to them, versus most of it going to the seller and Amazon getting a cut. It has also made me look closely at places in my city where I can pick things up. I've found a few new shops I didnt know existed because the default was Amazon. The only bummer was I lost about 5 years of Audible books, most I listened to once but a few were repeat listens. I will just pick them up on Libro when I get the desire to listen to it again.

We've dealt with a broken water heater, a city wide wifi outage, incredibly hot temps (thats the current thing), and loss of power for 30+ hours in the winter storm that hit the US Southeast earlier this year. It has really made me come to appreciate each of these things more than I did.

there is no way Fable and Mythos had such an impact in such a short amount of time that people were hiring based on it.

I think you underestimate how many people actually care about mass shootings.

New comment by rocketpastsix in "Tell HN: Meta is down"

rocketpastsix — Fri, 12 Jun 2026 14:25:02 +0000

there was. I think it was something with a key at a data center and a DNS config. You would think after that people would have learned to have their own website and POSSE everything outwards, but businesses in particular still think a Facebook/Meta presence is good enough.

New comment by rocketpastsix in "Workers are spending over 6 hours a week botsitting AI, fueling job frustration"

rocketpastsix — Thu, 11 Jun 2026 13:54:06 +0000

6 hours a week is low, unless its the average spread across industries. I think I spend more time in Claude Code via the CLI versus any other app I have on my laptop.

Like others said, the frustration is when it gets something so wrong you just think "wow, how'd you mess that up?" but when it gets it right its kind of nice. I also dont like that I basically tell Claude what to do, and then either go to busy work or waste time on the internet.

>He would _always_ say "Let's find out together", and then proceed to find the answer in front of me, doing effectively LMGTFY but in a way that was extremely more helpful (by watching his workflow and allowing questions) and empathetic (by taking time politely and starting from what I knew, not what he knew).

I absolutely love this.
