a few of these have opened in the UK but after visiting a number of them in Tokyo they just don’t work here.

people are loud and they mostly are just trendy up-market bars, rather than a place to enjoy the music.

staff in two of the places i visited in tokyo actively shushed you if you were too loud, which is actually a feature, to me

I live in London too, but I really don't think this would work well for most things, Royal Mail, sure. But if I give a this to a private parcel company, theres no way they are going to figure out that, despite being the only #9 in my postcode, there are 3 streets that my postcode covers, google maps doesn't locate my house specicically if I put "9 ', it will absolutely be marked as could not locate.

Yep i live on a managed estate full of old people who’ve lived here since they were built, only get VDSL. Management comittee wouldn’t even let Virgin install cable, so going to have to wait for them all to age out of the committee so we can get somewhere

I didn’t really even think about this properly until just now.. these days I am looking at Reddit, Facebook groups and if needs be, YouTube (videos not by ‘creators’ as far as possible) to find information I used to google. Ads and referral links have totally ruined the usefulness of so much information.

my original airpods were bought feb 2018 and mine still last hours on output only, they last maybe 90 minutes using the microphone on calls though

Apples demolition of their entire universe of music products is unbelievably frustrating.

I know iTunes never got a great rep but it worked, and iTunes Match was fantastic. Now however they still charge for it, except its totally broken unless you instead pay for Apple Music (9.99/mo instead of 24.99/year).

Annoyed but there really isn’t much alternative on that front.

One thing I've noticed as I've got more experienced was that when I started out, a PM or senior engineer would give me a task to do.

I achieved the outcome, mostly with bad to average code that slowly improved over time.

When I finally understood the domain to make bigger scoped decisions, I started doing design docs beforehand and my code continued to improve greatly.

Now when assigning out work to more junior engineers I find myself giving them a high-level design doc, with some detail missing, they deliver higher quality work than I did at that stage, and they also seem to upskill faster.

This however depends on me making the right decisions at this stage, which is not always the case, so not fool-proof but an overall software quality improvement has definitely occured.

Similar experience working with Uniqlo UK staff, they would call us for support on trivial issues late at night, demanding that is was of the utmost importance some buried marketing text was changed on random content pages.

They mostly sounded like they had no choice but to do as they were told, and looked very exhausted when we met them in person.

agree a380 economy can be as comfortable (if you get the upstairs 2 seat aisle) as business in an old 747 ( flew lhr->dfw on an old ba 747, upstairs in business just before lockdown it was pretty sad up there)

I currently work for a big tech co, I have done so for a few years.

At this point I have a Phone, table and Macbook from work. I use all three on my own time, and don’t have any personal equivalents other than a shared desktop with my partner where I store things like films and music library.

I’m becoming increasingly conscious of the consequences of this, so HN, why shouldn’t I?

this is very interesting.. backend engineers get paid more than front end at the same level.

some of the location multiplayers makes the roles completely insane, scotland for example.

on a side note, i have a week of PTO booked in tokyo then a week in kyoto/osaka, leaving friday. do you think its safe to travel?
