They would argue that they don’t intend to stay forever in their new country so that makes them expats.

But like the post I replied to pointed out, someone from Bangladesh would not be called an expat but migrant worker. This is where class and social status gets mixed up in this as well.

I think they are both temporary immigrants.

To make it even more confusing, I know a few people who are ‘expats’ in their country of origin because they immigrated and then their employer moved them temporarily to their original country.

An expat is typically someone who is being moved by their employer, to a country other than their own, for a limited amount of time. Being white has nothing to do with it. I have known expats of every color and national origin. This term is still used by companies that send ‘expatriates’ out to other locations. Think someone going from SF to London for 3 years to set up a new office.

If you are moving somewhere on your own volition, you are an immigrant. You can also be a temporary immigrant, an undocumented immigrant etc.

If you are moving from country to country for short periods and working, you are a digital nomad. If you are moving countries but not working, you are a tourist. If you choose to stay forever in a country, you turn into an immigrant even if you were an expat, a digital nomad or a tourist before.

I guess what you are called comes down to your intent.

I saw that before I read the article and it made me read the article in a very different way than I normally do. As I was reading, I found myself thinking, "Why is it worded that way? What else is the writer trying to say, or not say?"

Now when I go back, there are eCommerce motorcycle delivery drivers everywhere though the number of Kirana stores still remains about the same. I have never seen a Quick commerce delivery driver though - I guess villages aren't the target for Q-commerce companies.

Can your library take all highlights from Readwise or just Kindle? I use Readwise Reader quite a bit and will love something that takes everything I save + all highlights + other places (Roam Research, Email, Calendar) etc. and I can just ask it questions.

What I do wonder is how private space owners will deal with AR/VR.

But your other option is to move to Germany, which you can still do after getting a US degree. So you seem to belong to one of the rare categories that I think should study in the US - globally mobile and not super tied to staying in the US after getting their degree.

The only other category is if someone are genuinely brilliant i.e. companies would fight to keep you even if that involves dealing with a crazy visa process.

I have seen this behavior more often in Europe but I guess it might be a thing in the US now too - I have been away from the day-to-day journalism scene for a long time.

Before that, I used Feedly and Google Reader before that.

I had originally started using Readwise to sync my Pocket and Memex highlights with Roam and it looks like you guys have removed the need for both by building Reader.

My pocket (pun unintended) thanks you, provided price isn't going up. But I think there is a lesson here. Pocket has done no innovation for years - a classic 'cash cow'. But then you guys show up and make a product that (for me) is 10x better. It is also clever that you haven't taken any VC funding because I don't think this a product that will ever be venture scale. Now, you guys can build cool stuff and make a good living in peace without chasing that elusive venture exit.

I moved to the Bay Area about a year ago and it seems like COVID has killed a lot of meetups. A lot of groups have gone virtual and moved to Zoom, Slack, Discord etc.
