I was blown away by how... retarded... my reading comprehension and skills really are, when I recently opened Charles Dickens' "Bleak House," reading just the first couple of pages in! Yet I am even more deeply troubled that I am above the median.

Structural misandry. I'm telling you the Zoomer/Alpha boys have taken notice and are checking out of the system. Chickens coming home to roost in a few more decades as the West goes longhouse and gets economically pounded by the East. I was an early bird in MGTOW, but now it's common knowledge and operating strategy for most young men.
Boys don't owe society squat, and now they know it!

One revolution that backfired massively: the departure from phonics reading to some sort of contextual whole-word one, where students were reprimanded for trying to sound the word out. By extension the loss of basic Greek & Latin has had a terrible impact; at least teach just enough to learn that most English words are compounds of simpler Greek/Latin words strung together (like German's adjectiveadjectiveadjectivenoun construction), which is very useful when either encountering an unfamiliar word and for constructing potentially new words.
Literacy rates are tanking as a result; Mississippi went from 49th to 1st in literacy by ditching the new-fangled whole word contextual style and going hard into phonics. Get them hooked on phonics again, then teach them Greek & Latin! Spanish/French/German/whatever should be the *second* foreign language they learn, gated behind Greek & Latin being their first. It was a huge disservice to my education that the 'dead' languages were not offered to me in [junior] high school. I can only conclude that the curriculum and test writers only want literate-enough workers who can't critically think but who can [barely] read and follow written instruction.

Very very poor format support on Apple devices. I have this problem when re-encoding videos for re-upload to Discord, SimpleX, and other destinations which have iOS users.
Only fix seems to be ditching Apple. I can only recommend GrapheneOS for [Pixel] phones (never Samsung), and a favorite flavor of GNU/Linux for general purpose (me: Qubes OS). Apple wants to sell a beautiful but limited walled garden, for a premium price... not worth it!

I agree with @protocolture (Robotech... nice). I will be handing GrapheneOS phones, Qubes OS laptops, and Mullvad subscriptions to my [future] kids and teaching them how the world really works and how to stay safe. I will teach them how to torrent, and how to sysadmin like it was reading and writing. I will teach them to treat the internet like a real life spy vs spy battlezone, basically always falsify and poison as much as possible, the vital information about one's self. I will teach them to hate both Apple and Microsoft, and the reasons why they should hate them.
What I won't do is lock them down, like so much of this comment section is in support of doing. I am disgusted by the death of the cyberpunk ethos from the turn of the millennium.

>There's no controversy in having drugs, guns, alcohol, porn and other things 'behind the counter'
There is controversy! My grandfather and his schoolmates all regularly brought hunting rifles on their trips to the schoolhouse and home (1930s), to hunt opportune meals. There was never any problem with school shootings, which IMO are likely the fault of the prison-authoritarian style that schools morphed into during the latter-half of the 20th century. He had me drink shots with him when I was under 10 years old, because he wanted to make sure I knew drinking was ultimately a boring, uninteresting, stupid activity. Alcohol was always available and I was even welcome to partake anytime (as long as I did it at home)... I hardly ever touched the stuff, and still don't even now. He was a police officer and firearms instructor in a big midwest town, he even taught me how to shoot around that age. He taught me that government is neither god nor good, it is just raw power that has to steal from someone to give to another.
I miss my grandfather so much!
Also, thank goodness my folks were computer illiterate; I never had issues with blocking software (though I would probably have defeated any... easily). I grew up looking at porn and gore occasionally from my very early teens. Maybe try teaching your children about the world instead of hiding them away from it?

I hope [semi-]decentralized applications like Hyphanet and Matrix take off with teens as the lockdowns ensue, because they will grow into adults with the same cyber/cipherpunk mentality we '80s & '90s kids grew up with.
Rule 1 of The Internet hasn't changed, it's: never put your real info into the boxes. Never!

I already own the SwissMicros DM41X, DM42, DM15L, and DM16L. Excellent quality devices, and built like absolute tanks! Picking up any of them will leave you astonished, a DM41X (or DM42) with its anodized metal back plate feels like it weighs at least 2x a TI-89 Titanium. I have as many of the HP-41C module files as I could find on MoHPC and other sites stored in my DM41X. They are all very high quality devices, I can't recommend them enough!

On Qubes OS my P16 has abysmal battery life, but that's OK! I own my system, it is more secure than the two main slap fighter camps ITT, and the battery is really only a 30-min UPS to me (I always plug in). I never understood thin underpowered craptop enjoyers and their smug eight hour battery life aura, like... just use a pen and paper notebook at that point!

"Piracy" today is not stealing IP. It's not even what it used to mean, when it was originally used to describe rogue publishers who violated copyright. IP laws as used today against private downloaders and users are the legalization of plundering of people who do the equivalent of hear a fact/idea and act on it or use it. IP cannot be stolen, an "immunity from plundering" fee is what's being paid (license). The whole justification for it with software, namely copying from disc/internet to local storage, and then copying from local storage into RAM, is a legal formality to facilitate this plundering.
It is plundering those who didn't pay you for legal immunity.

>Counterpoint: is the web browser not already fulfilling the "universal app engine" need?
Counter-counterpoint: Maybe it's time to require professional engineer certification before a software product can be shipped in a way that can be monetized. It's to filter devs from the industry who look at browsers today and go "Yeah, this is a good universal app engine."
