(May 2025)"

Most of what I'm working on ends up being social clubs.
Tech Pizza Mondays has been going well, as the Toronto HN meetup. If you're reading this on HN, you're welcome to join us -> URL Mondays.Pizza details on fedi.
We just finished Toronto's Pizza Day, our fifth year in a row and most successful so far. toronto.pizzadao.xyz will eventually get updated to next year's event invite.
I threw a fun experimental comedy party, and I plan to throw another in August. Having a volunteer cast was great, the clown burlesque was shockingly great. I hope to find some team members who want to join forces and put on the greatest talent show this town has ever seen!
Working on founding a school in Toronto has been very difficult, feels like I'm making zero real progress over time. If anyone cares deeply about education, I'd be happy to talk. I'm extremely enthusiastic about the Sudbury Valley School model.
And this last week I started a fitness club, where most weekdays we do strength training with giant wooden swords. Looking for people who want to join up and get strong and have fun!

This is an invitation to you - our Monday evening social group is ready to add a new member or two.
We have been meeting in Toronto every Monday for a couple years now, and it has been a really nice consistent part of life. We focus on thoughtful conversation, usually centered around using technology for a better life and a better world.
There's no corporate sponsor to mess up the vibe, and any presentations are projects and demos brought by individual members. Most demos are Free and Open tech, sometimes research papers, sometimes just whatever is on our minds.
We'll be at Victory Cafe 6pm tonight Monday October 7th, and we hope you'll join us :)

The comparison is direct and apt, as a comment on a story about devices delivered with hostile software on them.
From a consumer POV, they are indistinguishable, are they not?
At least third party malware works silently and efficiently. First party hateware puts ads in the start menu.

ZSA has some openness in their software, but their hardware (and it is a hardware company) is closed.
That's part of the reason why my ZSA gear is gathering dust in silence, but my Prusa gear runs 24 hours a day and everyone who will listen knows about it.
Principles matter.

I bought a MK3S+&Enclosure this year instead of 5 clones.
I'll be buying a MK4 and an XL, again instead of 15 chinesium clone machines.
Free Openness, reliability, trustworthiness - that's what I paid a multiple for.
Joseph puts his name on every machine, every spool of filament. I trust that if and when something goes wrong, it's his neck on the line to make it right.
I welcome a newer, stronger, toothier approach to Free and Open hardware and software.
If that means a patent trust, or a consortium for enforcement, or whatever collaboration between large players can become, it would be great if this could be the catalyst.
