My 2012 Air is still my main computer. Started regressing around 2018. Was slow for a while until I patched it with Monterey. Ventura is running even better. Still tough for dev (especially iOS dev)..but it's certainly salvageable. Hoping to buy a new pro within next year

I let marijuana destroy my life. For about a year, I experienced all the benefits ppl use it for. Then all of a sudden I would get panic attacks and full-on psychosis. I would not wish these episodes on my worst enemy.
The smell of it is so ubiquitous now that it's legal and it's a great deal of anxiety for someone like me.
I acknowledge its benefits and that I'm probably a rare case. But it is disturbing to me how mainstream it's become. Certainly..some ppl will face the same repercussions I went through and I don't want that to happen.
I still think it should be controlled medically and not as available as lotto tickets

I left a very toxic job where I was the only dev 11 months ago.
Kinda been on sabbatical and living off savings.
I've done several other things outside of dev (farming, art modeling, rideshare and deliveries, clinical trial, retail, and am actually working as a dishwasher tonight)
Harsh reality has set in that I need to return to work though.
The thing is...for most people there's not much you can do that will even let you make close to half of what you'd make in tech.
I also found that I was stressing myself out at minimum wage jobs too (not even close to as bad as tech).
So I kinda concluded that you should make as much as you can if you're gonna be stressed (to an extent of course).
I don't have family or any big payments, debt. I live below my means. Just turned 30 and one thing I'm considering is working for next decade in tech and investing everything to retire in early 40s

I've found that I've incidentally been doing this and am already planning on continuing the pattern.
I've had some shame about not making most of my past year off though. My entrepreneurial ideas haven't taken off, I didn't quite cut it with freelancing, and I honestly didn't rest that much (just spent time worrying about $).
All learning though, I now have an idea of how much I'll need to actually feel free next time.
Any other insights though? Thanks!

Hi!
Was wondering if anyone has changed careers from tech (dev, engineering, mgmt, IT, etc)
Been doing this (web dev) for 5+ yrs and relatively successful. I believe in trying everything and so just becoming "a better tech person" for 40+ yrs doesn't quite sit well with me. I have an MS in Comp Eng btw, just kinda more than burnt out and fed up with tech.
I'm open into discovering more opportunities with the Arts and Business, etc.
However, I acknowledge the pay prob won't be nearly as much as what I could make in a traditional tech career trajectory..
What were your insights recommendations, etc.?

What's the alternative though? What other "career" change can a SWE make that will make them even close to what they used to make?
What about escaping corporate swe and working for oneself?

yea, 5 yrs experience and MS..
It's a really easy field to be burnt out in I think. Taking time off to focus on other goals in life. Ideally...I'd like to work on my own accord. entrepreneurship or consulting.
Doesn't help that the interview process is extremely taxing.
Just interviewed at 3 MAANG companies back-to-back..Felt like cramming for finals

Wow, we sound like exactly the same person.
I was also lone-dev. Leave. If possible, leave asap, or save enough $ to do so. Life is short...you may not even want to get back into tech at all. You're not being respected being the only dev and they're only taking advantage of you.
Yes..knowing how to solve leetcode problems seems the only way to get a decent paying dev job nowadays. I think it's bs but that's unfortunately how it is. There's no way you can study this if you're working FT (more than that) and killing yourself at a job you hate.
