Plenty of comments here saying what we're all thinking, so I THINK this is an appropriate thread to share my app which specifically removes the ads and algorithm and only shows posts from the profiles you follow.

This right here is the thing that shows how much influence big tech has. Everyone has their anecdotal story about porn, spam, malware or whatever flooding Twitter meanwhile your local city government treats it as an official communications channel.

I tried Gitea for a while but the support mechanism was "Beg for help on Discord and hope someone replies", this left us high and dry a few times.

ex-GitLabber here, and yes this is a pretty common scenario. GitLab as a product is pretty good, however GitLab Inc, is not great at supporting the broader community especially the SMB-Mid tier self-hosted users. (If you're big enterprise you'll get white glove support)

It's a bummer because they had so much potential to dethrone GitHub a few years ago but really missed the opportunity to position themselves as a viable alternative. That said I still use gitlab.com for my personal projects over anything owned by Microsoft.

You enter the profiles you want to follow from Instagram, TikTok, x, etc.. and the app only shows posts from those profiles.

There's no algorithm, ads or infinite scroll, so when you've seen all the new posts, that's the end of the feed. It provides a natural stopping point for your scrolling.

Sad, I met him very briefly ~20 years ago when he was giving a talk at my Alma Mater (no, you've never heard of it)

Funny enough the audience was made up of his contemporaries but were completely computer-illiterate. He wanted to discuss heady topics but the Q&A was mostly people asking him to explain Linux (How can it be free? Who owns it?) I could tell he was a bit annoyed to have to get so basic with his audience but I think he kind of somewhat enjoyed sharing a new concept with them.

No, the point is that we specifically don't do that, "top minds" is a relative term. The app lets you curate your own feed of what you would consider the top, and also keep that feed totally separate from your other interests.

Narro, it's a user-curated social media app. You add the profiles you follow on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and Narro shows their posts in chronological order, with no algorithm, no ads, and no tracking.

The "new" idea we are working on is a feed that ends. Every mainstream app is engineered with infinite scroll. Narro is finite by design. You open it, you see what the people you follow actually posted, you reach the end, and you're done.

Then the next time you open the app you're still only getting new content from the profiles you followed. It ends up creating a totally different user habit.

LinkedIn is totally useless at this point.

- If you're a job seeker, most of the jobs are fake for pretend growth optics. - If you're a senior level or executive you're targeted non-stop by sales people telling you about "the conversations they're having ..." - If you're looking for actual thought leadership or interesting information, you're bombarded with random tik-tok style videos, totally contrived stories and "lessons" to how ordering at Starbucks is like managing cloud infrastructure

It's turned into a completely artificial and useless community because Microsoft chased the same growth and engagement metrics as Facebook did, now no one considers it to be a place for serious discussion.

It sounds like they're dancing around what may be a social issue; ERCOT sent an email asking people to "conserve", within 30 minutes they saw a negative impact. Is it possible some recipients saw the email and took the complete opposite action?
