I'm trying to understand how big of a deal ChatGPT and the like is or isn't. Even people in AI don't seem to agree on whether it's going to change everything or it's overhyped and not a major advancement. Which is it? Or somewhere in the middle?

Google recently said they are recalibrating the level of risk they're willing to take with releasing this technology. OpenAI's CEO responded saying

How does this resolve?

OpenAI not releasing something isn't going to stop Google or another player from releasing it. Won't they have to recalibrate too or be overtaken? Pandora's box is already open.

It's weird because America is at once the home of the free, but also the home of a hardcore set of puritans who love to get control of the moral compass and enforce it on everyone else.

It comes in waves. The last wave was in the 80s. But this wave is larger and more totalizing. Control of the internet and AI output is the ultimate hall monitor tool.
