Went down this route and haven't had any issues with heat or having to replace heatsinks, add fans, etc. that others mentioned, but your mileage may vary.

Runs opnsense on proxmox, along with some other containers. It's been a great little box.

- Syncthing, Restic, Backblaze B2: Syncs photos and other files from devices to a NAS, then Restic to create backups locally and on Backblaze B2. For the in-laws and others, I make sure they're backed up using Google Photos or Apple iCloud

- Jellyfin: Streaming our own movies and shows.

- Tailscale: Connect to the home network from anywhere

- Caddy server: Reverse proxy in front of the services like Jellyfin

- Paperless-NGX: Document repository that's hooked up to the scanner and email accounts to keep things organized.

There's a few other ones that get some use, but we use the above almost daily.

It's been a while since I posted, but I hope to correct that in the near future. Mostly random software projects and tips, sprinkled with some other posts.

Mine was much smaller, just having a genuine chat with him at a hiring event without knowing who he was at the time, but it left a lasting impression. Gone too soon, unfortunately.

The campus there was also different than many other national lab campuses in that it's an open campus and doesn't have the military entrances that others have. It felt like the culture was much more laid back than the FAANG and other corporate cultures that OP mentioned, but perhaps more bureaucratic as well. Again, I was an intern, so didn't have much visibility into that aspect. Overall, definitely a positive experience and I could see myself there if things lined up right.

It's one third of the Manhattan Project National Historic Park, a few hours southeast of Seattle, with the other portions in New Mexico and Tennessee. I haven't been able to see the other portions, but walking into the main chamber of the B Reactor and looking up at it was an inspiring experience.
