It's not entirely clear to me after reading, but the author addresses it somewhat in the article. Seems like it depends on the persistence of the crawler, if the host instance permits that info to be shared:
> In the example above, if Ringo were to reshare John's reshare of my status - John doesn't know about it. Only the original poster (me) gets notified. If John doesn't share his social graph, it might be possible to work out where Ringo saw the status - but that's rather unlikely.
> Mastodon has an API rate limit which only allows 80 results per request and 1 request per second. That makes it long and tedious to crawl thousands of results.
> Similarly, some instances do not share their social data or expose anything of significance. Some servers may no longer exist, or might have changed names. It's impossible to get a comprehensive view of the entire Fediverse network.

- Bitwarden: Been great for sharing passwords and other secrets. We moved to it from LastPass, never tried 1Password, which seems to have a lot of proponents here
- Syncthing, Restic, Backblaze B2: Syncs photos and other files from devices to a NAS, then Restic to create backups locally and on Backblaze B2. For the in-laws and others, I make sure they're backed up using Google Photos or Apple iCloud
- Jellyfin: Streaming our own movies and shows.
- Tailscale: Connect to the home network from anywhere
- Caddy server: Reverse proxy in front of the services like Jellyfin
- Paperless-NGX: Document repository that's hooked up to the scanner and email accounts to keep things organized.
There's a few other ones that get some use, but we use the above almost daily.

Loved reading this, and then pleasantly surprised at seeing the name at the end, though I probably shouldn't be. Everyone I've come across who met Brandon always seems to have a story of his kindness.
Mine was much smaller, just having a genuine chat with him at a hiring event without knowing who he was at the time, but it left a lasting impression. Gone too soon, unfortunately.

It's been a minute since I was an intern there, but haven't seen this one mentioned yet. I spent a summer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL, https://pnnl.gov) and really enjoyed my time. It seemed like compensation was pretty good, especially considering the cost of living in the area. There were a number of times when we needed some help from a subject matter expert, and we could go down the hall or to another building and speak with someone who recently published on the topic. There was a lot of interesting work going on, from national security issues to storing nuclear waste, etc.
The campus there was also different than many other national lab campuses in that it's an open campus and doesn't have the military entrances that others have. It felt like the culture was much more laid back than the FAANG and other corporate cultures that OP mentioned, but perhaps more bureaucratic as well. Again, I was an intern, so didn't have much visibility into that aspect. Overall, definitely a positive experience and I could see myself there if things lined up right.

Really enjoyed this post, I'll need to try to get a tour as well, hopefully within this decade.
If this sort of thing interests you, another interesting tour is the Hanford Site B Reactor tour: https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/hanford-attend-a-b-reactor-to...
It's one third of the Manhattan Project National Historic Park, a few hours southeast of Seattle, with the other portions in New Mexico and Tennessee. I haven't been able to see the other portions, but walking into the main chamber of the B Reactor and looking up at it was an inspiring experience.
