>At some point, books, movies, comics, etc, etc might have been considered addictive
The difference compared to a book is that a book is not personalized for each individual reader, so the example is not a good one IMHO.

> For instance, if a child buys their own device
Then the law can make it illegal to sell smartphones or computers to 12 years olds or we could just ask the parents to do a bit of work and ensure their children is not buying devices behind their backs.
The idea is to make it easy for responsible parents to give a device to their children and make it easy for legal websites to block minors from adult content. We can't get perfect results but good enough could shut upo the complainers and maybe we get them do things like educating parents on how to proceed when they gift a device to a child.

Exactly, I did not seen such a screen, but this giants have the budget to hire UX experts to clearly design the initial setup to clearly ask if this device is for a child or if is for multiple users to make more accounts. Also to make happy the other guy that commented they could ask you if you do not want to sure adult content too and in that case set same flags int he system.
Seems such a simple solution rather then each appa nd website having to figure out a way to do it.

This shit already happened years ago with consoles, i setup a choild account and the games were restrcited and other features also.
I am not paid by a trilion dollar company to decide if it should be a birthday input, or a dropdown where you select your political and religious conviction about what your child should see. Sony figured it out, if Apple pays me I will spend more time to write for them a UX flow so average people could sert the accpunts up and the rest could ask their priest, cousins or other person that can follow instructions to setup the account for them.
The giants shoudl have solved this decades ago and not wait for the fanatic religious to push for this as laws and get the goverments involved, now you will get 25 different laws about this.

>to push the age verification requirement off to the app store providers,
and makes more sense, Apple and Google have your credit card , or if you are a parent that bought soem phone for you child then at first boot up as a parent should be your job to setup a child account.

For linux we have the users and groups concept, the distro can add an adult group and when you give your child a linux a device and create the account you would just chose adulr or minor , or enter a birthdate. No freedom lost for the geeks that install Ubuntu or Arch for themselves and we do not need some extra hardware for the rare cases where a child has access to soem computer and he also can wipe it and install Linux on it. Distro makes can make the live usb default user to be set as not adult. Good enough solutions are easy but I do not understand why Big Tech (Google and Apple) did not work on a standard for this. (maybe both Apple and Google profits would suffer if they did)

>This is a great solution to the stated problem. The issue is that nobody is actually trying to solve the stated problem. This is a terrible solution to the real 'problem' which is the lack of surveillance power and information control.
So on the Sony consoles I created an account for my child and guess what they have implemented some stuff to block children from adult content on some stuff.
So if Big Tech would actually want to prevent laws to be created could make it easy for a parent to setup the account for a child (most children this days have mobile stuff and consoles so they could start with those), we just need the browsers to read the age flag from the OS and put it in a header, then the websites owners can respect that flag.
I know that someone would say that some clever teen would crack their locked down windows/linux to change the flag but this is a super rare case, we should start with the 99% cases, mobile phones and consoles are already locked down so an OS API that tells the browser if this is an child account and a browser header would solve the issue, most porn websites or similar adult sites would have no reason not to respect this header , it would make their job easier then say Steam having to always popup a birth date thing when a game is mature.

Sorry I am not aware about the Germany fake news, so link some reputable source to it, afaik Germany has very strong laws about fascism, nazis so make sure this is an EU problem and not Germany old laws unrelated to EU.
And I mean there are many stupid proposals, but there is no in effect law to put you in prison because you are supporting some legal political party that is in opposition. There are laws that you might be punished if you are doxing someone and calling people to kill that person online and this is not some law the EU created, it would be stupid to have a law to punish me if i call my neighbor werius stuff and damage his reputation but there would be no laws to call for killing of a specific person or a group of persons.

>The EU is about to fall for the same trick, maybe multiple times over, by funding multiple toy model initiatives that are far behind SOTA. I believe they will also impose ideology on every model trained in the EU, similar to what reported in the article
Most important think for EU is an option of EU hosted inference , you can't fake that with a "clever" prompt. Then you also need support for all eU languages and you also can't fake that with a system prompt.
Anw what ideology is EU pushing that scares USAians and Ruzzians? that humans have value and should be equal in front of the laws ?
Btw do you guys remember when X had a prompt to make their AI stop saying bad things about Trump and Elon? It was found out, X blame it on some intern and the story dissapeared from the public debate, and IMo is a very on topic story, where tech is used to bias the AI to suck up on a politician and a billionaire.
How many of you think that was actually an intern mistake and that now the Elon AI is 100% not RLed to be biased to be pro Elon and MAGA ?

I think the conclusion is that Vibe oding is shit, and I agree with this, but having an AI assistant that can do some specific tasks that you can review is a good strategy.
I also have a story about Vibe Coding, I had the AI make for me a mqarkdown editor with some extra features, it worked fine but the problem is I have no idea how it works, I do not know if I can add feature X easily or it needs a rewrite from scratch, I have no ideas for improvements or new features, if there is a problem I have no clue what causes it since I I never looked at the code.
So I concluded that I (others can do whatever they want, they are free people with their own standards ) I will only use Vibe Coding for throw away personal shit, that I will not make public, like for example I made some bash scripts, some python scripts to automate some stuff.

OK, but stop with bullshit that you get more stability because of new packages, you get latest features you read about or watched in some video but you also get the latest bugs, and to get fixes for this latest bugs you will upgrade again in a few months and you get the latest fixes and some new bugs.
There are some valid usecases to use rolling or some bleeding edge distro, like if you want to contribute to KDE or similar project you would want to track latests library versions, but for doing say a web dev job and soem enterteminent an LTS distro works better, you do not upgrade and you have the surprise that GNOME removed yet some new feature you were using, or soem stuff in Plasma broke and now you get a ton of notifications about something not working, or maybe you did not read the Arch forums before upgrading and you had cool package Y that conflicts with cool package Z and now your system is unbootable and you need to fix it instead of doing your actual work. (Arch fans should first Google Arch upgrade briked my system before commenting that this never happened to them).
Btw I used Arch in the past too when I had more free time and loved thinkering with my system.

Right, cause latest packages bring only latest features and bug fixes and never bring new bugs, do you ever wonder how those bugs that the latest packages fix get in ?
I recommend for people that want things to not change and not get new bugs every update to use an LTS distro like Kubuntu and only get latest kernels or drivers from a PPA or upstream if you really have to. I am not running the latest KDE stuff and I feel fine, I am not suffering in pain for some cool new feature in Plasma and some new bug, I am comfortable with the existing features and existing bugs.

>The Uk could force the OS to have that toggle instead of censoring the internet
I know, and my point is if Big Tech would have added that toggle (or add it now before even more countries or USA states make more laws with different requierments ), made it easy to setup when you turn on a device for the first time to give it to your child then you could tell the politicians that the solution exists already. Now using the think of the children some governments will implement more invasive laws.
