Completely agree. Use of features like this places one the wrong side of the vendors moat, increasing switching cost, decreasing competitive pressure.

What you are describing is sometimes considered to be part of the mythical Cat IIIC standard. The gap between Cat IIIB and Cat IIIC is being able to fully automate the entire taxiing and other ground manoeuvring. It is widely considered to be impossible to achieve safely with current tech. It does feel like the future though.

They are remarkably common in long lived enterprise Linux servers. Think eg database servers or web servers where they are of the (much longer lived) pet era not cattle era.
Not sure why you need to belittle one example just to add another

SSH does support certificate based auth, and it’s a great upgrade to grant yourself if you are responsible for a multi human single user system. It grants revocation, short lifetime, and identity metadata for auditing, all with vanilla tooling that doesn’t impose things on the target system.

As someone charged with enabling users across an enterprise with AI tooling, the majority of whom are not in the software dev category, this article is perfectly mirroring my approach. Which is reassuring!
Challenges we are solving with centralised MCP are around brand guardianship, tone of voice, internal jargon and domain context, access to common data sources, and via the resources methods in MCP access to “skills” that prescribe patterns and shims for expected paths and ways of connecting/extracting data.
