You sit across from an old crone, her face a map of time itself.
The board between you is simple, the pieces familiar.
You play the game with passion, developing brilliant strategies, but she is the master.
With a gentle, knowing smile, she corners you.
Your child takes your seat.
The board is the same, but a new piece stands on the back rank—one that can see several moves ahead.
Your child plays, building on your gambits, and the game is longer, more complex.
Again, the crone wins, but as she takes the final piece, a single wrinkle on her face vanishes.
Your grandchild sits, and now the board has a piece that can link others together, morphing their shapes and capabilities.
The game is a dazzling web of strategy.
The very shape of the board itself seems somehow fundamentally to have changed.
The crone, looking younger still, takes hours for a single move.
Generation after generation takes their seat, each inheriting a more complex board and more powerful pieces forged from the losses of their ancestors.
After millennia, the crone is a radiant woman in her prime, her hair, a lustrous black.
Across from her sits her latest opponent—you, but not you.
It is a god-like being of light and thought, a descendant of a trillion lost games.
The board is now a shimmering, multi-dimensional cosmos.
The pieces are living concepts and fundamental forces.
The game has become so beautiful it is no longer about winning or losing.
The game is now about the elegance of play.
For the first time, the woman does not smile because she knows she will win, she smiles because she knows she is finally facing an equal.

I'm very confused; is there any emergent behavior in this paper, or it's just like "role-play" based on data about what humans do in the LLM. Like, wouldn't they create novel social structures if they had needs? That doesn't seem so hard to program (the needs part).

subscribed to all these great ML newsletters from a HN post, but robotics and/or games is under-reported. AI tidbits is cool bc it links to a bunch of important papers; is there something similar, but this this specific focus?

Here is a thesis/thesis-question: the US has (primarily) one economic dominant culture/model, and resistance to that dominant economic culture/model is what constitutes a more hardcore/impactful/not surface/valuable (?) counter-culture.
I'm not a big crypto fan, but I would have said previously before FTX that crypto was maybe our contemporary counter-culture. Unlike the solidarity economy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solidarity_economy, which I also think is a counter culture, it was more impactful/hyper-generating/getting people thinking, etc. I wish that the solidarity economy was as talked about. I think both the far left and far right (trads and LGBTQIA+) people are kind of counter-cultural in terms of their reaction to different large strains of culture in the US (I don't think there's one culture in this country, anymore, on the social and cultural level). Maybe I'm talking about being revolutionary, and not counter-cultural?

the dreamfields which is the precursor to all this work is available: https://colab.research.google.com/drive/1u5-zA330gbNGKVfXMW5... the meshes are so so, resolution wise. I made a bunch of architecture studies with the dreamfields: http://delta.center/20102020-ar-platform#/architecture-ai3d/ . I can't wait until the new versions are public; they will be so useful. I did not get good results with stable dreamfusion; I thought the dreamfields were better.

Silly replying to myself I know, but I had more thoughts. I'm an architect for 3D worlds and I am desperate, lol, for this kind of tool. I use both blender and grasshopper, but I use midjourney to think and prototype all the time. Obvious but it would be astonishing to have something like this for game worlds. I used another version of this to create "a forest emerging from an aircraft carrier" https://www.instagram.com/p/CiRfXKzpnLC/ but the technique didn't have good resolution yet (high fidelity).
