Dr. Adam Rutherford is a great pop science presence for debunking, or at the very least, addressing the claims that intelligence tracks with race on a genetic basis if you're truly interested in this topic.

And the poor are dying from a death of a thousand social services cuts- diminished mental and physical health services, childcare and teen programs, etc. It's not unreasonable to assess whether local spending on police and other services can be re-balanced for better community outcomes.

Imagine if you had that substantial cash reserve. This would be an opportune time to buy back shares on the open market after taking care of operating expenses.

One reason cash reserves don't often exist is "activist" investors and private equity who calculate (book value - market cap) as their potential upside from buying undervalued shares and stripping the cash assets before dumping the remains.

Anyway it's an complicated mix. I'd like there to be more emphasis on sustainable valuation growth from some adminstration and the SEC, but I don't know enough to suggest solutions to improve governance.

I feel a sense of loss when the "biodiversity" of what appear to be financially viable careers is declining.

Edit: I can't reply to the children (might be my karma game) and so I'll reply here. The linked article is about specifically about power and privilege, and how being a woman in the tech business puts you at a severe disadvantage in your job, in your community of choice. The reason why I ask is justification "I'm European so..." seems dangerously close to "lighten up" or "get a sense of humor". It's fine to put yourself out there on a joke, humor is hard, but rewarding. But when someone takes offense, I find it problematic when all of a sudden it's their problem for not getting your style or sense of humor.

When a privileged person is forced to check their privilege and they respond with "oh, my bad, I didn't realize, etc." I accept maybe they don't have the experience or perspective that comes with being disenfranchised in that particular regard. When they respond with "lighten up" I find there is no attempt to internalize why someone could feel sadness, or discomfort, or frustration about the offensive topic at hand.

Interestingly, an economist recently estimated LeBron James' fair market value at 50 million dollars a year, which is far above his 20m current salary (which is largely driven by the CBA to keep player salaries low).

Also, when you sign an NBA contract, most of it is guaranteed both ways. That is to say, a four year contract means you get paid for four years even if you get injured or your performance is lacking. The converse being, you can't simply sign with another team for higher salary if you feel you're being underpaid, underutilized, or under appreciated. There are exceptions, player and team options, but those are typically in the final year of a multi-year contract.

I don't have strong thoughts on the general point of the article, but I thought I'd clarify some of the basketball background info, because I feel it's somewhat misleadingly presented. And I'm not sure the NBA really serves as a great analogy with the author's points.
