listen im trying to be objective about this but i cant help but point out that fsd is navigating crowded intersections, crowded downtown areas and roads without lane markers. ive seen videos of it

to be honest FSD seems to be coming along albeit behind schedule. ive watched videos of the fsd beta and it is the closest thing ive ever seen to a car driving itself in an uncontrolled environment. i wonder what you make of dirty teslas latest driving video on youtube?

i cant stop thinking about the tesla bot. was he he outright lying? is it just a ploy to recruit robotics people? is it even plausible?
i think the most challenging aspect of the idea is interacting with the world, picking up and handling various objects.
its obvious from the presentation that fsd is very good at placing itself in space and mapping out its environment as well as devising routes even when accounting for things like other moving objects. boston dynamics has built machines that take the input of a joystick and translate that into four-legged locomotion. so if you just took FSD and bolted that on top of a spot or atlas, you would have a machine that gets you a very long way towards tesla bot. something that can walk and navigate by itself. so the question is whether or not tesla will be able to recreate what boston dynamics has done and whether or not they could do that on the time-scale that was insinuated by musk. the last time i checked, boston dynamics does not use any NN in their robots.
and then theres the question of interacting with the world. i think its a fair assumption based on ai day that fsd would be able to create a very rich and accurate map of its surroundings. so that half of the question is taken care of. but how could they get it to grasp a drill and manipulate it in an intelligent way? the implication is that they would train a NN to provide that signal. but how are you going to train that? they have thousands of cars out in the world generating tons of driving data. where are they going to get data for performing these tasks? are you going to train it on every task that might be asked of it? its hypothetically possible but thats hard data to generate and label. it would take a really long time at best, and even then it would be an experiment, just as likely to fail as succeed.
it seems to me that this must be a stunt where the intention is to build something that can walk around but not manipulate things or do anything useful. i would change my mind if musk came out with an explanation of how hes going to train interaction.

wow. in the middle of reading that, i realized that this is a watershed moment. why would apple go back on their painstakingly crafted image and reputation of being staunchly pro privacy? its not for the sake of the children (lol). no, something happened that has changed the equation for apple. some kind of decisive shift has occurred. maybe apple has finally caved in to the chinese market, like everyone else in the US, and is now making their devices compatible with chinese surveillance. or maybe the US government has finally managed to force apple to crack open its shell of encryption in the name of a western flavored surveillance. but either way, i think it is a watershed moment because securing privacy will from this moment onward be a fringe occupation in the west. unless a competitor rises up -- but thats impossible because there arent enough people who care about privacy to sustain a privacy company. thats the real reason why privacy has died today.
if you really want to save the children, why not build the scanning into safari? scan the whole phone! just scan it all. its really no different than what they are doing. its not like they would have to cross the rubicon to do it, not anymore anyway.
and also i think its interesting how kids will adjust to this. i think a lot of kids wont hear about this and will find themselves caught up in a child porn case.
im so proud of the responses that people seem to generally have. it makes me feel confident in the future of the world.
isnt there some device to encrypt and decrypt messages with a separate device that couples to your phone? like a device fit into a case and that has a keyboard interface built into a screen protector with indium oxide electrodes.

i was thinking about writing a novel now that im retired. i became uninterested in fiction completely about ten years ago. i just cant bring myself to care about something that didnt happen. it inevitably ends up being about people having sex or some kind of love triangle. no matter what novel, no matter how austere or dignified, if it was published in the past ten years then it uses some kind of visceral limbic-system mind bait. its some semi-interesting sci-fi with a whole lot of click bait slathered on top. even red mars, one of the only fictional books i like, has this problem.
but fiction can be worth it when its laying out ideas that are so new and so fresh that it is intrinsically valuable. but these grand visions dont involve people or relationships at their core, so making a book out of it can be difficult.
i think the next great sci-fi novel will be about mars. i feel like there are a lot of aspects of mars colonization that have not been picked up by the hive-mind yet. practical aspects of living there and moving things there. and generally applying the rules of today to that world. the arbitrage is in the fact that people usually paint the future with a utopian, optimistic brush but the same rules of economics and politics will apply on mars just as much as they do here. maybe that sounds like red mars but it would be different.

how the fuck am i supposed to know if that image i downloaded from some random subreddit is of a girl who is 17.98 years old? how long until we just use a NN to identify images of children automatically? she looks pretty young so i guess you will get disemboweled alive in prison? what is stopping someone from planting an image on your phone or a physical picture somewhere on your property? im so tired of this fucking dogma around child porn. you can always identify the presence of dogma by the accompanying vacuum of logic that follows in its wake. a teenage girl can go to jail for distributing pictures that she took of herself. do i even need to say more?

yes, one of the weakest points of EVs in general. the new developments in thermals, namely the unification of the thermals and bridging of all thermal systems, stands to take a pretty big bite out of that. not to mention the heat pump. vacuum panels integrated into the pack could make it a non-issue, although i havent seen any talk of tesla doing that. for me, i would really like to be able to have a generator on board not only to extend range but also provide peace of mind for blizzards. the nice thing about that setup is that when the complicated machinery in the gas engine stops working, i can just take it off and put a new one on. or use it to power a jobsite. if the cybertruck would allow you to charge while moving, im not sure i could justify buying anything else for my personal situation.

for all the talk of musk being nothing more than a salesman, con artist and charlatan... i desperately want a truck that is all stainless steel. the salt is brutal where i live. and almost everyone i know wants a truck that wont be hobbled by complicated emissions equipment. try driving across Nebraska in a snow storm when the engine shuts itself down because a diesel emissions sensor, totally unnecessary for the actual operation of the truck, stops working correctly. for all the mud people sling, hes offering something that a lot of people desperately want and that the established players refuse to deliver.
