That's helpful insight. My prediction is that as it keeps getting more expensive for the big players to run these models, we will start to see some kind of hybrid workload where they offload some of the work to your computer for smaller agents while keeping the orchestration and planning running in the data centers.
So I think the investment in the extra hardware is worth it, even if you don't currently plan on running LLMs locally.

I don't yet know how to give it money to spend. I could give it a small crypto wallet, but few places accept that as currency. I was thinking of using one of those virtual credit card services that lets me set limits and block certain merchants. I will treat it like an intern. If it can show responsibility and reliability with small amounts then I will slowly increase its spending limit over time (and depending on the nature of the tasks it's performing).

Thinking this through… I spent around $3500 and $4500 on my last two MBPs, but got 9 years of use out of each of them. That’s only $450/yr.
But where I used to get a new iPhone every other year, I’m now on the fourth year of my 13P and it still works great. That’s only $300/yr.
It’s interesting to think about.

Is this not the logical result of fighting spammers? It’s easier to trust messages coming from mega corp when you know mega corp has invested in mechanisms that ensure their systems aren’t being used to send spam. I certainly don’t like the negative impact on people who choose to self host, but I also don’t see it as an intentional effort to shut out legitimate emails.
Case in point a bit further down in the comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43902653

I’m bothered by the UK thing because beyond just the marketing, we had Tim declare that “Privacy is a human right.”
Marketing is BS, and I expect companies to screw customers and ideals (“Do no evil”) whenever it’s convenient. But I really thought Tim understood the assignment and would keep Apple on track for at least the duration of his tenure.
Now every nation knows they can pass similar laws and Apple will do nothing.

I still generate random passwords for the questions. I don’t like that someone who knows me well could use them to gain access to an account.
… but yes we definitely need extra fields for storing that and lots of other related data.
I’m a 1Password user and one of the features I really like is that it saves ALL of the fields from a signup form along with the password. That has saved me a couple of times where I needed to know some value I had entered at the time I created an account.

The slippery slope argument is no doubt a valid one. But Apple specifically implemented (almost) the CSAM scanning after being threatened by multiple politicians - notably Lindsey Graham - that if they didn’t find a solution that they would legislate a backdoor into the OS for law enforcement. I think Apple was doing everything they could to appease the demand without actually violating users’ privacy. While it’s clear they failed to please end users, the solution itself was pretty ingenious.
Edit: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/12/senate-judiciary-commi...
