> Knowledge workers hold a different relationship to their labor than manufacturing workers did. For a cognitive professional, expertise is not only an activity. It is a large part of the self.
Really? The way a knowledge worker feels about their labor is different than a manufacturing worker? They don't or can't have similar pride in their labor? In their skills?
This is some seriously self-aggrandizing bullshit. Touch some grass.

I wonder what sort of environment and conditions contribute to large populations seeking to use opioids in the first place?
Theory: this is a socioeconomic problem rather than a public health problem. Our systems care too little for people. The easiest solution then is for people to self-medicate.
It's easier to deny people a harmful salve that they feel they need than to provide them the social supports that they deserve.

This is far more true for junior and perhaps mid-career engineers, unless you're working in an extremely well-defined problem space (* see below).
When working as a SWE, the longer I did it (~30 years) more of my time was spent understanding the problem, the edge cases, how to handle the edge cases, how to do all of it affordable, on time, and within budget.
That's engineering.
What you're describing is "writing code". That's lower value than "solving the problem".
I imagine a response, "But agile development, etc."
Yep. Part of solving the often sometimes involves creating prototypes to determine the essential viability of the solution. But that's only part of it. Which prototypes do you write? How much time do you allocate to same before accepting it's a dead end (at least for now) and punting on it?
That's engineering.
Me probably coming across as a dick today? Well, I was diagnosed autistic a year ago, and I'm on extended sabbatical/unemployment (3 years now) due to autistic burnout. And masking is part of how I got the burnout.**
* Why would someone be paying for that when there is likely someone else already doing it? Unless you're the rare person who hopes to "disrupt" the competition).
** has me begging the question of why I write here at all. SMH. Why do I do what I do? No idea sometimes.

He's wealthy enough that he doesn't have to care. Sadly, he's one of many, most, who demonstrate what happens what you have unbelievable wealth: you do whatever you want to whoever you want without feeling remorse.
And why not? What does he have to fear? He controls the stock. He's not going to lose his company. He's not going to lose his wealth.
He's all but invulnerable as long as he doesn't do wrong (enough) by whatever government he lives under and sucks up enough that he can get away with the rest.
This is not an excuse. This is disgust. He, and most billionaires, are rotten bastards. It's not whether they're awful, it's how awful.
